A safari-style retreat in the heart of the City of Gold? Yip, believe it or not, such a place does exist. It's called Aquanzi Lodge, and it can be found a mere 7km from Fourways.
At the heart of Aquanzi lies its bush surrounds and salt-water swimming pools (with 'beach') - crystal clear and a very tempting alternative to a stuffy boardroom meeting in downtown Joburg. With Aquanzi lying so close to the city action, you have the best of both worlds here.
Dotted around the pool, there's a pick of 14 free-standing thatched chalets and executive rooms.
The ensuite rooms sleeps two apiece and are tastefully decorated in a distinct African flavour. If you need to squeeze in a third, a fold-out bed/sleeper couch can be requested at a very reasonable rate.
The chalets come with cosy little braai areas, and some of them have kitchenettes for self-catering - a freshly brewed cup of Jo on your private patio, under bush and birdsong? You can have it all at Aquanzi.
Besides peace and tranquillity and a comfy bed, Aquanzi offers a bunch of facilities: yummy breakfasts, solar-heated 4m dive pool, conference facilities, a homely lounge area with big screen TV, a a library.
Just up the road from the CBD, this is is a sure-fire winner for your next trip into the big bad city.

"We stayed at Aquanzi Lodge in March for a long weekend. Although it is not too far from the city, which is very convenient, it is very tranquil and quiet. The staff are very friendly and the service is excellent. There was a good selection for breakfast and relaxing by the pool at the "beach" was great fun. I would definitely recommend this country lodge to anyone who is looking for a business or leisure trip."

"Immaculately run by a German couple who own the 3-acre estate. Chalets are spaced well apart from one another and very tastefully appointed in terms of design, furniture and facilities. The estate offers the features of a country escape yet is on the doorstep of the city. Breakfasts are beautifully prepared and served, often on the attractive terrace beside the large swimming/dive pool. A beach effect with loungers and leisure pool is also offered on the estate. Ample safe and convenient parking for vehicles with 24-hour security and patrolling night watchman. Highly recommended for international tourists wishing to spend time in Johannesburg because of the quality of the experience and the proximity of Aquanzi to places of interest."
