Budget Getaways Review

With majestic mountains rising up in the distance, and circled by green grass, vineyards, plum, apricot and peach trees, Arendsig appears to offer a most pleasant stay. And unlike some of the scary places we have come across on our travels into the dark interior this particular farmhouse is light-filled and well-maintained.

(A quick aside while we are on this subject... Folks, while the old 'traditional farmhouse' may be the stuff of your weekend dreams, let us tell you something: the reality can fall way short of the fantasy. A question. Do you really want to stay at a place with creaking floorboards, damp rising up flaky walls and dark nooks and crannies where oupa once sat huddled in his frayed dressing gown nervously fingering the Grootboek as he implored the creator for forgiveness for some unspeakable earthly sin. Of course you don't. And that's why you would opt for Arendsig.)

What you have here is a clean, fresh and comfortable house that sleeps a total eight guests in four bedrooms, all with twin beds (plus an extra pair of singles). Injecting further comfort to your weekend will be the fact that there are three full bathrooms - which means shorter queues first thing Saturday morning, especially after a hard night. Ahem...

Examining the pics under the Budget Getaways forensic microscope, the entire house seems characterized by generous spaces, whether it be the bedrooms, the kitchen or the open living areas - with indoor braai, may we add. Honing in further, the decor and furnishings all appear to be of a good standard, with nice attention to detail. The facts add up to a very comfortable stay.

With 128ha to explore and the river only 300m away there is more than enough to do on the farm itself (birdwatching, mountain biking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, long walks), and Robertson is just 19km up the road - a little town that has really pulled itself up by the bootstraps; pop in on a Saturday morning and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of creative energy flowing up and down its jacaranda'd avenues, whether it be in the form of restaurants or some or other happening.

In our book, Arendsig appears to be a failsafe getaway.

"We stayed here to celebrate a special family occasion (5 adults, 3 young kids), and this place was awesome! It was perfectly tucked away to properly enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, but close enough to lots of cool places to visit and a convenient distance from Cape Town for a weekend getaway. The farmhouse was so spacious and well equipped (even better than the photos online), and the kids loved the big lawn for running around. Franzanne was super efficient and helpful, and Oom Frikkie made us feel right at home. Thanks for a memorable weekend, we hope to be back!"

"We had a wonderful stay, Franzanne was very welcoming and accommodating. We can highly recommended Arendsig Farmhouse."

Thank you Delia for your review. Glad you enjoyed it!

"We had a fantastic stay over a long, chilly August weekend. Although it was mid-winter, there was plenty to do in the area and the house was warm - the braai room was well used! The beds are extremely comfortable and the house is very spacious. The bedrooms are a good size, there are enough bathrooms so there's no queue-waiting and more than enough space (inside and out) for 4 kids under the age of 10. The area is very pretty. Franzanne and Jan were very attentive to any questions we had and we would definitely go back."

"A tranquil farm stay! Away from the busyness of town & close to many wine farms."

"We had a wonderful stay at Arendsig Farmhouse. The house is ideal for a family getaway as it has 4 spacious bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, so there is more than enough space for everyone. We loved spending time in the braai room over the weekend as it was freezing weather. We will definitely go again and would recommend the farmhouse to anyone."

"What a lovely experience this getaway was. We had a family Christmas in a beautiful farmhouse and it was what I have always wanted. The house is very well equipped, neat and tidy and the detail of the decor gives the house an exquisite feel. We loved the fact that we had three bathrooms at our disposal... no queues to wash ourselves. Marianne was the perfect host, she is open, friendly and helpful. We will be back."

"Lovely place to stay with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on. It is beautiful and peaceful, warm and cosy. The hosts are friendly and happy to help with anything that you need. The complimentary bottle of wine was lovely. Would love to visit again."

"We couldn't have asked for a better setting to celebrate Christmas 2016 than this wonderful, spacious farmhouse! There was more than enough room for our family group of 10. We loved the kitchen and braai room and ended up using both as our "kuier" area. The house is surrounded by fruit trees and our kids enjoyed the farm tremendously. We even enjoyed a picnic next to the river on Christmas afternoon. Thank you so much to our hosts for a lovely stay and the bottle of complementary wine from the farm's own boutique cellar!"

"We had a lovely weekend stay at Arendsig Farmhouse. It is large and well-equipped especially suited for a big group or a few families. The hosts also went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable. The water filter wasn't working despite their best efforts to fix it, so they specially brought us 5 litres of bottled drinking water and phoned a few times to ensure we were okay. We especially liked the outside braai room - very cosy and good for relaxing."

"One of the best farmhouses we have stayed at in Bonnievale. Great layout, all necessary crockery and cutlery required and a large fridge and bonus to have a dishwasher. Thanks Mariana. Although it was quite windy when we visited the indoor braai room was our safe haven. Van Loveren and Viljoensdrift wine farms a must visit. We will be back."

"We had such a good time at Arendsig, from the beautiful spacious house to the gorgeous gardens and mountain views! We will definitely go back very soon, next time for a bit longer. I would like to thank Neline and her husband for their assistance and hospitality, greatly appreciated."

"We had a wonderful weekend at Arendsig! The spacious farmhouse was well-equipped with everything we needed, and the 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms were just right for our couples' breakaway. Arendsig has all the modern conveniences whilst still retaining that 'farmhouse' feel. Surrounded by mountains and vineyards (and situated on and close to so many wine farms), Arendsig is perfectly located. Thank you, Marianne, for an enjoyable stay. Thanks to Budget Getaways for the recommendation. We'll be back!"

"A beautiful, well-equipped and homely guesthouse in a picturesque valley. The tranquil and serene environment contributes to the valuable time we spent with our loved ones."

"This was the best value for money I have had in a very long time. Excellent setting for wine lovers. Best place for a group of friends or family to relax for a mini getaway. Well equipped and clean."

"What an amazing place. We enjoyed every second of our stay. Ample space (10 girls with room!), perfectly tranquil surroundings, wine tasting on site and many in the area, such a personal and excellent service. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer! Perfect for any getaway occasion. Will definitely be visiting here again!"

"This is accommodation I would definitely recommend although it would serve more as a base rather than as a destination in itself. You have access to the attractions of both Bonnievale (which is closer) and Robertson. The owners certainly made good on their quote (on a blackboard in the kitchen) by Nelson Boswell. This generosity is evident in: the spaciousness of the house, the vast array of kitchen appliances (and baking equipment!) and our favourite - a separate braai room. Thanks for a great stay."

"This is a place to unwind amongst the vineyards and to visit all that Robertson has to offer. Take friends and family and feel at home in the tastefully refurbished farmhouse. With an indoor braai room and an ample kitchen, it is a round the year destination."

"We really enjoyed our stay. Quiet, situated between the vineyards. Still close to the wine routes. The bedrooms and bathrooms are excellent. A real farmhouse. Facilities good. We loved the indoor braai area."
