Budget Getaways Review

Koringberg? Okay, we know most of you have never heard of it, never mind been there. Allow us to enlighten...

Koringberg is in fact a pleasant rural settlement dozing under the Swartland sun, 18km from Piketberg and a stone's throw from the Mother City herself - reason enough to visit given the dismal fuel hikes. But an even better reason is Beluwi Farmhouse.

This tastefully restored century-old homestead sits right in the action (if we may call it that), in the heart of Koringberg village.

As with most homes of this era, space is something there's plenty of in this abode, with four double bedrooms sleeping a grand total of 10 Budget weekenders. Furthermore, there's unlikely to be the usual 7am traffic jam at the bathroom door, because Beluwi's got a total of three bathrooms.

One of the bedrooms even comes with own private veranda and kitchenette - allowing greater independence all round.

Turning to the decor, this is mix of light and muted colours, and furnishings that combine the modern and past. Exposed timber beams, warm wooden floors and rustic screed all add to the feel-good factor.

The kitchen is farm-style, fitted with everything you'll need. The dining table is in the kitchen, as is a wood-burning stove for some old-time bread-baking like ouma used to do.

The living room comes decked with comfy sofas, TV, decoder and DVD player - bring own smart card.

Outdoor living at Beluwi is all about lazy indulgence. A covered stoep runs down the length of the house, dropping to a lawned area for general frolicking, while pa turns the chops at the built-in braai. Upping the ante further is Beluwi's plunge pool - a converted reservoir that you will be worshipping come mid-summer.

There’s enough to keep you busy in and around the village: Late afternoon strolls up the hill behind the house for a birds-eye view; a post-braai amble around the village; wine tasting 10km up the road; a session at the popular Misverstand Dam and its waterski fraternity; a drive into Piketberg; a quick round of golf at either Piketberg or Mooreesberg.

Examining the guest feedback, Beluwi Farm House certainly appears a fine choice for a group seeking a combo of simple elegance and something off the trodden path. In the words of one satisfied customer: “We had a wonderful weekend away with friends and enjoyed the un-touristy vibe of Koringberg. Well managed by the owners. Will definitely come back!”

Guest Reviews

"We had a fantastic weekend at this beautiful house! So well equipped and comfortable. Just think other guests should know that it is very close to the informal settlement and it can get quite noisy."

"Take lots of wine and good friends. It's a special place to unwind."
