Budget Getaways Review

Situated at the foot of the dramatic Langeberg mountains, off the R60 between Montagu and Swellendam, Bonfrutti offers wholesome country living on a fruit and wine farm, with oodles of fresh country air and clear mountain streams, topped off with comfortable self-catering cottages.

Oppiwerf
consists of two of the oldest farm houses in the area, and is an ideal spot for a group or larger gathering, with a sleeping capacity of 18. Both houses ooze character, with original yellowwood doors and beams, and clay and bamboo ceilings that keep the heat out in summer and the cold out in winter. The houses are located right next to each other, sharing a lawn, central braai area that can seat up to 25 and a view of the dam (ideal for a dip) from the voorstoep.

Both Oppiwerf houses are let as a combined unit, with Oppiwerf 1 sleeping up to eight in two bedrooms and housing a central kitchen, which has a wide open traditional hearth, where you will no doubt find yourself most evenings. Right alongside, Oppiwerf 2, sleeps up to 10 in four bedrooms.

Moving along a bit, Perskepit and the recently restored Perskepit Waenhuis are let as a combined unit. Still with original wooden floors and farm style decor, Perskepit has two bedrooms, while Waenhuis has one double ensuite with two single beds in the living room. Central to the two are a braai area and cement watertank which has been converted into a swimming pool, which in turn is heated via wood-fired burner to create a hot tub. Wowza! To soak away and enjoy those views is simply idyllic.

Druiwetros and Olyftak are about 500m down the drag and are both uncomplicated free-standing units. Druiwetros sports a double room and two extra beds in the living room, while Olyftak has two rooms (a queen and a twin) with two more single beds in the living room. Both units now also have splash pool heated by wood-fired stoves. Nice!

Unlike many latter-day farms, this particular one is a spacious affair, offering the usual farm attractions as well as the following: the big farm dam for swimming, fishing, mountain bike trail, hiking trail and approximately 500ha to explore on foot. Added to the platter is Bonfrutti's farm stall, stocked up with jams, dried fruit, olive oil, wood, ice, milk tart and a host of other treats including breakfast and light lunches.

Although we haven't had a chance to visit, Bonfrutti's guests have had a good time of it, with comments like, "Awesome setting, lovely cottage", "Peace, perfect peace", and "A slice of heaven."

Here's wishing you a similar experience.

"I highly recommend Bonfrutti to everyone... It is an amazing getaway for a family, friends or a couple, even a single person looking to recharge. The peace and quiet is soul food, with frogs croaking and sheep/lambs bleating. This is my third year that a friend and I have taken the June/July holiday to visit this pristine establishment, where attention to detail is outstanding and The Hosts Elmarie and Riaan Van Eeden go to the ends of the earth to accommodate their guests. You will never regret spending time here and it is a must for anyone's bucket list. The farm stall has the most delicious, homemade food and the best roostekoek ever. You need to visit this gem in order to say you have lived. God's country, a piece of Heaven on earth. Mountain biking, walking, hiking, Kolkol individual heated pools for total relaxation. Cant wait for my next time."

"A lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle. A plus is that you can take your fur babies along with prior arrangement. The views of the mountains, the hot tub, braai pit, hike to the Waterfall is really great. There's a wine farm about 1 km from the place on the same dirt road. We will be returning again in the future. Elmarie the owner is super nice, accommodating and helpful. I would certainly recommend visiting this gem of a place if you want to relax."

"This is the 2nd time we have used this place for a friends get-together. This time we were 8 adults so each had their own room and shower. Due to rain we made dinner in the kitchen with ease and with a fire going there was very "gesellig". I enjoyed our stay as did all my friends and it is really a nice place for a group of people to visit and "kuier". Will be back when I plan something like this again. The only negative for me personally is that in most of the rooms the toilet is separated from the room by a low wall so sounds and smells get heard by your partner and even though I have been married for years this is still one thing I am uncomfortable with. I had to send my wife out of the room."

"I cannot say enough great things about Bonfrutti. The cottages are beautifully decorated and the setting is idyllic. Elmarie & Riaan are super friendly and helpful and everything was just perfect (down to the pile of firewood they delivered right to our door). Do yourselves a favour and visit the farm stall to try one of their amazing roosterkoeke, they are worth the trip! We will definitely be back and we are telling everyone about this slice of heaven."

"The accommodation is well equipped and beautiful. It has everything you might need in a home away from home. My kids and I had a great time."

"Excellent"

"We recently enjoyed a birthday weekend here. It was a really nice experience. The hosts were friendly and helpful. The accommodation was great. The setting for Oppiwerf was brilliant. We all had a really good time. We enjoyed the well sign-posted walk to the waterfall. Overall a very pleasant experience and one I would repeat again."

"We had such a lovely weekend! Perfect spot for larger families with kids and dogs. The hike to the waterfall was great and the kids loved the boats and swimming in the dam."

"We had such a lovely family long weekend away at Bonfrutti. Fantastic accommodation, very friendly service and the best part is that we could take our furry babies along! We will be back."

"We loved the attention to detail and Elmarie and Riaan are super friendly and accommodating!"

"We had an absolutely wonderful stay, the children had a ball. The beds were very comfortable and the cottage was very well appointed. The hosts are very helpful and welcoming. We are already planning our return visit."

"What a lovely week. Riaan and Elmarie were wonderful hosts. Druiwetros Cottage lacked for nothing - there were electric fans for hot days, iced water in the fridge on arrival and a hammock for lazy afternoons on that lovely big stoep. It was peach harvest time, so there was plenty to watch. The whole place was spotlessly clean. The kitchen was fully equipped, as was the braai area. The plunge pool was most welcome. The beds were comfy and bathroom spacious. It was a real treat to watch a buck in our garden on one day, but we also spent time bird watching as well as star gazing in the evenings. Bonfrutti is perfectly located between Swellendam, Ashton, Montague and Bonnievale, making it very easy to explore the area. Having the farm stall so close by was great for breakfast, coffee, or other light meals. I have no reservations in recommending Bonfrutti."

"This has been such a pleasant experience, a home with real heart. For us city dwellers, visiting such a relaxed farmhouse atmosphere was such a treat. We, together with 2 other families (with small children) stayed in Oppiwerf 1&2. Upon our arrival at Bonfrutti, we received a very vocal greeting from the donkeys which proved to be a real hit with the kids. The farmhouse was authentic with moderns cons such as a dishwasher, indoor braai, satellite TV and a perfectly equipped kitchen. There was enough to do for young and old, from sitting on the stoep, to rowing the canoes or exploring the mountain, to feeding the donkeys. The Bonfrutti Padstal is also worth a visit. Thanks Elmarie and Riaan for true "platteland" hospitality."

"Absolutely amazing! The owners are super friendly and helpful. The setting is just beautiful, neat, clean and very cozy with everything you need. Definitely worth it."

"Bonfrutti was available on very short notice. The setting was perfect, quiet and safe. Elmarie was welcoming and hospitable. We will definitely consider another trip there."

"Bonfrutti is a gem. From the scrumptious breakfast, the mouthwatering roosterkoek and pre-peeled, oh so sweet prickly pears at the padstal to the comfortable accommodation. You could not possibly want for a single thing."

"We had an absolute amazing time. Our aim was to take time out and rest. That is what the surroundings and ambiance brought about; such a peaceful environment. We enjoyed doing absolutely nothing! We will be visiting soon!"

"What an amazing experience to stay at Bonfruttti (Perskepit)! Farm style homes nestled in the vineyards/fruit trees with comfortable beds and facilities. It's great for taking bicycles with, to peddle the farm routes on a dirt track. We were lucky to hike to the flowing waterfall (more like a casual stroll and then a little technical climb at the end), enjoying the fresh (very cold) water pools at the falls. We loved the nearby farm stall (also called Bonfrutti) with all the goodies and gadgets you could be needing, including a farm style kitchen/restaurant to enjoy a light meal or milkshake. It's well situated to stay at while exploring the area. Ashton, McGregor, Montague, Swellendam, Bonnievale and Robertson are all within a short drive. We have already booked again for our next visit and can't wait to go! An absolute gem of a place. Thank you to Elmarie and her staff. Superb!"

"This was our second stay at the Oude Werf, this time for Christmas and it was even better than the last! The house has been improved so there is a bigger living area and is still very well equipped for large groups - the dishwasher is a lifesaver! Riaan and Elmarie are amazing hosts and are always on hand to make sure that you have everything you need to make your stay a happy one. There is an amazing space for children to play and a wonderful fire pit for warm Robertson nights."

"Oh man, did we enjoy our stay. That "stoep" with it's spectacular view of the Langeberg mountains...we could've "kuier'd" there for ages - pure bliss. Our family stayed in Perskepit Farm House, while granny and grandpa made their abode in the smaller Perskepit Waenhuis. Both lodgings are tastefully and beautifully renovated and offers all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The cement watertank-transformed-into-a-swimming-pool provided lots of fun, even for Grandpa (77) and our Wire Hair Terrier, Katryn. For Grandma the canoe rides on the dam proved to be a highlight (her grandchildren did the rowing I must add). No need to do all your groceries beforehand as Bonfrutti Farm Stall is well stocked with local produce. We ran out of bread, but the farm stall came to our rescue with "roosterkoeke". Big, fresh and delicious (wish we ran out of bread sooner). We see that the budget brak hasn't yet had a chance to visit Bonfrutti. Oh man, we know your kind of place...this is it! Allow us the privilege to recommend this getaway to you. Satisfaction guaranteed."

"A little piece of heaven. A group of seniors had the entire place for themselves for a weekend and oh was it awesome. They have thought of everything when it comes to the beautiful accommodation. You think of it, and voila it is available. What makes it so super impressive is the hospitality of the owners and the "take me back to my child hood" Padstal. The long walks and for the brave ones, do attempt the walk to the waterfall. Indeed a place to visit. We will be back."

"I recently visited Bonfrutti with my son for the weekend. Our chalet was beautifully furnished inside, it had everything we needed for the weekend, there was a fire place in the lounge area where we thoroughly enjoyed having a braai one evening indoors when it was windy outside. There is a double bedroom with a beautiful big shower, there were two single beds in the lounge area which we relaxed on watching movies in the evening (DSTV is provided). Outside we had our own splash pool filled with dam water and a big circular braai area with lots of tree trunk seating. We loved the early mornings having our breakfast on the deck with the most beautiful mountain and dam views. There are canoes available and oars so you can take a relaxing canoe trip on the dam. There are only a few chalets on the farm so it was quiet and tranquil. Their farm stall up the road had amazing food, yummy milkshakes and friendly staff with a great play area. There were lots of little goodies on sale inside the shop as well as some select wines. The husband and wife team were friendly and welcoming. My son and I had the most amazing time at Bonfrutti and will most definitely be back. I recommend this to couples who want a relaxing weekend as well as families who would love a break or even groups of friends as the two of the chalets are next to each other (with a bamboo wall if you do require privacy)."

"We had an wonderful stay, and the place completely to ourselves! Wonderful and very comfortable."

"Lovely setting and venue. We loved the tranquility and dams. The cottage was fully equipped and we loved the fire pit which was a huge surprise. We will definitely be back."

"What an excellent weekend at Oppiwerf! This really is the perfect place for a large group. The accommodation has everything you'd need - potjie pots, ample cutlery and crockery, comfy beds, perfect views, friendly donkeys, cool dam, vast grass section, social braai pit... It was really good to hear kids being kids again. Will book again soon."

"We had a lovely weekend at Bonfrutti. The accommodation is excellent, with beautiful views. We enjoyed the indoor and outdoor braai options and we had lots of fun with a large group of friends. It is also very good value for money. We hope to go back again soon."

"Spent a gorgeous couple of winter days at Oppiwerf, a cleverly spacious spot for a large group to enjoy. Kids rode their bikes up and down the farm road, feeding the donkeys en route. They paddled in the canoes on the dam/s for fun and fishing. Dads went mountain biking, moms trail running, hiking to the waterfall, played Ptanque on the lawn and board games on the long front stoep or at the big farm kitchen table by the fire. Quaint and minimalist dcor, but with all the necessary provisions. Hosts very accommodating and approachable. Highly recommend."

"We stayed for the long week end and had an amazing time. The setting is perfect for a farm get away. The kids didn't stop playing outside especially since the weather was so awesome. Loved the canoes down my the dam. The kids built forts, fished, played with clay and even attempted a swim. The donkeys are so cool, they loved the fresh grass the kids fed them. On top of all the spectacular scenery we had the best time with the owners Riaan and Elmarie. Riaan drove us all around his 500ha farm with our 4x4, we were so grateful for his enthusiasm and kindness. Thank you. We wouldn't have known how big the farm was! Elmarie has made Bonfrutti farm stall a little vintage gem. So tastefully decorated with divine treats for us all. The food and hospitality was incredible. I can't say enough about how amazing our stay was and what wonderful people we met. Thank you. The walk up to the waterfall was so worth the beautiful scenery, such a stunning special haven of peace. We will definitely be back to stay in the old farmhouse."

"My family stayed in Perskepit. We found it clean and well equipped. There's a great view out front across the valley. The children enjoyed playing on the grass area around the property, the plunge pool and the friendly donkeys in the field nearby. The service from Elmarie and Riaan was very friendly and they made sure we had everything we need. Recommended."

"I had the pleasure of celebrating my 30th birthday with 25 of my friends at Bonfrutti Farm. The weekend was spectacular. The cottages are so well equipped, including a large fridge which is excellent for groups. The beds and bedding are delightfully comfortable. The setting is absolutely stunning. The owners are warm and hospitable. I would recommend Bonfrutti to anyone looking for a relaxing, comfortable getaway."

"A piece of heaven nestled in a lush environment."

"If you're looking for peace and tranquillity, Bonfrutti is the place to book. Two nights were definitely not enough and therefore we will be back for more. Thank you Elmarie and Riaan for sharing your piece of paradise with us."

"Stayed at Bonfrutti over Christmas. A lovely and special stay, since this was our first getaway and Christmas with our little baby. Well equipped cottage, an awesome view and very friendly hosts. We loved sitting on the stoep and enjoy the view, lie in the hammock or cool off in our very own plunge pool. The cottage seems well equipped for winter too since there is a nice fireplace inside and plenty of blankets to keep you warm. Go for breakfast at the host's farmstall down the road, peddle in a canoe in the dam or have a stroll on the farm. All ingredients for a relaxed weekend away. Added bonus: the shower is amazing."

"We had a wonderful stay. It is tranquil and peaceful, we had a great rest. The cottage we stayed in was fully equipped, clean and one great thing no matter how hot it was outside the cottage was cool. We had such a great time that we have booked the entire accommodation at Bonfrutti for my husband's 50th in February. The owners are lovely couple and we were allowed to walk and explore their farm as well drive with our 4x4."

"We couldn't have picked a better place for our December family gathering (which included seven adults and eight children). We stayed at the Oude Werf and it felt like we had a farm to ourselves. With no one within shouting distance, we could truly relax safe in the knowledge that we weren't disturbing anyone else. The Oude Werf is incredibly well equipped, the beds are super comfy, the rooms very spacious and the outside braai area was a real hit. Riaan and Elmarie are incredible hosts and nothing was too much to ask. I would definitely recommend De Oude Werf for a big group looking to spend quality time together in a beautiful setting. Excellent value for money."

"A real gem! From the start when we were met by Rian and delivered directly to the main house with warm vetkoeks, we knew we were at a special place. The rooms were impeccably clean and luxurious, not to mention HUGE! The kitchen was so sociable and well stocked, even down to liquid soap in every bathroom, not a detail was forgotten. We also loved the special artistic touches to the decor, it has all been so cleverly done. The kids were entertained all weekend with the canoes on the dam and the adults loved the walk to the waterfall as well as wiling time away around the boma. Excellent value for money, we will definitely return."

"Four families had a great time in a lovely setting with good facilities. A place where you can get away from it all, kids had a wonderful time in the dam, cycling, messing about in the woods. Adults enjoyed fire pit, 4x4 trail and relaxed environment. Would return with pleasure."

"This is a gem with exceptional value for money spend. We stayed at Perskepit, Oudewerf-1 and Oudewerf-2. All the units are clean, beautifully decorated, and well equipped from the kitchen, bathroom to the braai. The beds with their mattresses and bedding are so clean and tidy and fresh, you feel right at home. Elmarie and Riaan are very friendly and accommodating. We can't wait to re-unite with nature on this farm again."

"Bonfrutti is a very homely experience. The views are amazing. It felt as someone thought carefully about how to make us comfortable. Warm quaint scenic. Our host and hostess so warm we felt as though visiting family in the country. Our grandson even experience bottle feeding a new born lamb. We experienced a close up drive through the sheep camp on the back of the farmers bakkie. Feeding apples and carrots to Viva and Tjoklet the donkies was amazing too. We certainly will be doing this again."

"Elmarie, owner of Bonfrutti has an exceptional eye for five star treatment. Our stay in the farmhouse was superb and memorable. Thank you for an awesome weekend away. May God bless you, your family and your business."

"This is a lovely getaway! The peace and tranquility are awesome."

"Bonfrutti is hands down, without a doubt, the best place we have stayed in from the Budget Getaways stable. We didn't know anything about the farm before our first visit and chose it for our 2013 summer holidays only because of its pet friendly policy. I had no particular expectations of the place because the rates were so reasonable. We have been so taken by the high standard of accommodation, the many activities available, the scenery and the tranquility of the farm that not only have we been back twice more since December, we've taken our extended families and close friends with us and we're booked to go back next month. My little girl loves the donkeys, my husband loves the hiking, and we all love the cosy braais and our favourite sunset boat trips. Bonnievale is surrounded by great wine and cheese farms and a much more affordable holiday destination than the east coast."

"A very pretty setting with lots of lovely mountain bike tracks. We loved that it was dog friendly. We had a most enjoyable long-weekend stay."

"Thank you Riaan and Elmarie for your hospitality and sharing this beautiful valley with the outside world. The chalets was well equiped and maintained. Will surely come back and do the long mountain bike ride."

"Will be coming back."

"A great weekend was spent at Oude Werf on Bonfrutti. Stunning views, plenty of space for kids to play, extremely well-equipped with everything you might need. Was extremely happy to find two potjie pots as I had forgotten mine at home! Lovely walking routes and a perfect place to relax. Even though we were 18 people, we were never in each other's way, plenty of space! Highly recommendable."

"A big thank you to Elmarie and Riaan! You made us feel very welcome even though we kept bugging you with visits to see the puppies! We stayed at the De Oude Werf cottages for two nights and wish that we could have stayed longer. The cottages are beautiful, well equipped and we all felt very comfortable. A perfect getaway for groups or large families!"

"Eleven of us (Granny, Grandpa, children, spouses and grandchildren) had a really wonderful relaxing week in the two De Oude Werf homes. The three grandchildren had a really great time boating and swimming in the dam and riding their bikes around the large grounds. Every evening the grandchildren would walk down to the donkeys to feed them their carrots. Fortunately, we had made sure that we took a good supply with us and the donkeys thanked us well with a loud "eeyor" when we left! The climb up to the waterfall was hot but well worth it as we had a nice long dip in the clear but chilly pool there. We were sorry that we did not do that more often but there is a next time! A perfect place for running, mountain biking and just relaxing! The houses are very well equipped and we lacked nothing - and having five bathrooms and plenty of bedrooms certainly helped make this a really great get away. We can recommend this beautiful farm to anyone and will be back. Thanks Elmarie and Riaan!"

"Our favourite place to stay! Riaan and Elmarie are the perfect hosts and Elmarie's special touches in the cottages make them truly welcoming and comfortable, not to mention fully equipped with all we need. My family has lost track of the number of times we have stayed at Bonfrutti and are always looking for an excuse to return. The scenery of valleys and mountains is unequalled. My boys love the dam while my husband and I relish the peaceful tranquility."

"Thank you Elmari and Riaan for a wonderful weekend. This was our 4th time in Perskepit and we had a blast! The kids had a lot of fun feeding Viva (the donkey ) and we had to go into town to get some more apples. The cottage has every thing you need - you just need to bring food and drink. Thank you Elmari for the warm bread rolls you brought to us and the bottle of wine! The view around us of the mountains never gets dull. We will visit you again. Baie Dankie!"

"Many thanks to Riaan and Elmarie for being exceptional hosts. Perskepit Cottage was beautifully decorated and well-equipped. The views of the mountains, vineyards, peach orchards and dams were breathtaking. My children loved the 'fairyland' forest, which led to a hidden dam. Our every need was taken care of, the farm quiet and peaceful and we felt extremely safe. Overall, a fabulous holiday!"

"This was a lovely break from the hustle and bustle of town. The fantastic hospitality and the beautiful landscape really made us feel as though we had left everything far behind. The tubing on the dam was great and the cottages are so well furnished that all you need to remember is Tabard and fly strips!"

"The morning mist over the farm was magical. However, it was not particularly exceptional; the dam was far from the cottage and the noise from the vehicles passing the cottages detracted from the peaceful atmosphere."
