Budget Getaways Review

Surrounded by orchards and vineyards in the broad Breede River valley, and eight kilometers from Bonnievale, lies the farm Bordeaux and its three rustic timber cottages.

It's the type of weekend spot you’ll find yourself lazing about on your wooden deck, hat resting gently over face, the occasional plop of a leaping fish providing the only motivation to raise your weary head.

The three cottages, namely Merlot, Chardonnay and Shiraz, are privately positioned and sleep a possible six each - four is more realistic.

Cobbled together by rustic planks and boards - Huck Finn would feel right at home here - the interiors are clad in tongue-and-groove timber and simply decorated. Each has two double rooms, with an additional two single beds in the living room.

Within each cottage, is a central bathroom with shower, a kitchen with fridge, microwave and mini-oven, and an indoor braai/fireplace.

If you really can't do without, there's the added the distraction of DSTV - bring your own decoder or PVR.

Outdoor living is well provided for. A wooden deck and braai area are attached to each cottage, leading down to your private jetty. Parents of young toddlers beware!

With the gentle flow of the Breede literally on your doorstep, and a canoe provided at each cottage, no second guessing how you will be spending your weekend here. Kicking back with a good book on the jetty, slack fishing line nearby… A sundowner paddle down the river, fine bottle of Grand Cru and Woolies snack hamper tucked between the legs… The options for lazy decadence are endless…

We're yet to receive any firsthand feedback, but Bordeaux River Cottages sounds like one laid-back rustic hideout.

"Definitely recommended for people wanting a rustic and tranquil breakaway. Beautiful setting next to the river, very peaceful. Canoe fun was exciting. Wooden cabin is fully equipped with most things you could possibly need for a rustic time away from home. Pet friendly is a BIG plus. People with balance / walking difficulties should be mindful - the wooden deck on the outside is uneven and some gaps are larger, so it may not be suitable."

"The setting was amazing and tranquil. The facilities were also great and up to standard. Although the location is "remote" and therefore one would expect insects of all sorts, I didn't expect them to have nests in the glasses. There were also several cobwebs and it seemed that the place hasn't been dusted for quite some time. But despite the above, we loved our stay."

"What a gem of a place! Kitchen was well-equipped, it was a home away from home in a sense. Sandra was the perfect host, very friendly. Unit extremely neat even though it had a rustic feel about it, we sat on the deck whenever we could, pity about the severe wind, but we still had a ball. One could hear the silence, was good for the soul. Will be back!"

"A wonderful stay and great indoor braai which served as warmth and for cooking."

"We've been to Bordeaux River Cottages twice now, and will definitely go back there for a third. It's super tranquil with amazing bird life. The cottages are basic but it has everything you need. The inside braai makes it super cozy for colder or windier days, and the deck area is great for warmer days. The cottages are quite far apart so it feels very private, and our dog could roam around freely. The canoe is also a great, fun addition to each cottage."

"Absolutely awesome, we were welcomed by host Linda, good communication with directions and photos in advance freedom of farm and beautiful naartjies given to us by the fruit pickers. Everything was available, warm blankets, towels and the cottage is beautifully decorated. Even though we were on level 6 load shedding, we had cosy fires and plenty of braais and wine from nearby farm. Birding is also fantastic for those keen - take your binoculars. The cottages are also pet friendly and my dad's Staffy had a great time. The decks have gates to keep dogs in, I can highly recommend this guest farm. Thank you Sandra and Linda we will be back."

"A rustic little log cabin equipped with everything you need, with your own personal walkway set under trees leading to the Breede river. Birds singing, a little fishing, a fire going and the beautiful starry nights. What more could you ask for. A wonderful break away with my elderly parents. Sandra was a great hostess providing us with info as we needed. A must for anyone looking to just get away and relax."

"Net 'n terugvoering oor ons onlangse verblyf by Bordeaux River Cotages. 5/5 sterre vir hulle. Ons het al met die wegry besluit ons sal beslis weer gaan. Baie goed ontvang deur Linda ons gasvrou en het ons lekker gesels. Hartsmens van formaat."

"Very friendly hosts and beautiful view from cabin. Enjoyed it very much. Definitely visiting again"

"We enjoyed our stay at Shiraz and will be back again sometime soon. Lovely setting to get away for a break."

"The chalet is fully kitted. We lacked for nothing! The setting is paradise! Beautiful. Our host Sandra is amazing- very friendly and ready with any info."

"We had a lovely restful weekend away from the kids and were pleasantly surprised by the clean and comfortable cottage. The Shiraz cottage was perfect for fishing and just relaxing. The cottages are far from each other, so we saw and heard no other guests the whole weekend. We can recommend this getaway highly!"

"Cottage is cozy and fully equipped. The view and sounds of nature are amazing. We enjoyed canoeing and having the option to braai inside and outside. Linda was a lovely hostess and we will definitely be back."

"What an amazing setting. The sound of the Breede River, the birds and absolute peace and tranquility make this an amazing place to stay. The cottages are fully equipped and cosy. We loved canoeing. Each cottage has its own canoe. Lots of privacy. We will be back! Thank you Linda for being such a gracious hostess."

"Extremely relaxing stay. The location above the river is superb and the hosts attentive and welcoming. There are good walks through the citrus trees and vineyard. Very private and peaceful."

"We enjoyed our two days there, weather was a bit windy, also realised for older people who like to fish was a bit difficult. Friendliness of staff and Linda was exceptional."

"We had a lovely stay at Chardonnay Cottage. It is quiet and a perfect place to 'get away', and is perfectly equipped for the weekend away trip. They even offer firelighters for the braai!"

"Amazing venue, facilities and very helpful host!"

"This place is an absolute hidden gem. I loved the setting, we stayed in merlot. The pictures provided are a bit misleading, never the less we enjoyed our stay. The overgrown trees disturbed my view of the river from the porch, but I still enjoyed the sounds of the various birds species."

"It was a great weekend away...quiet surroundings with breathtaking views."

"Fabulous!"

"Really lovely setting. Most relaxing and a great way to relax and to get back to nature. Lovely host."

"Great break away, very peaceful setting. The canoeing on the river was so much fun, we also took a walk along the ash road, through the plantations. And it is nice that there is more than one braai place."

"Just what we needed during these tough time, a relaxing, tranquil getaway on the river. Very cute, clean, cosy cottage for six people with lovely little amenities that you wouldn't expect for a budget friendly self catering cottage. Our dog thoroughly enjoyed the river and the canoes is a great touch."

"We had a fantastic relaxing time, absolutely beautiful, we loved swimming in the river and will definitely be back!"

"Bordeaux River Cottages was everything I had hoped for. Quick drive from Cape Town and Lina our hostess was awesome. The booking and directions was spot on. A great break away destination. The venue was clean and comfortable and the best part was I could take my doggie with."

"Amazing place to get away from it all!"

"A magical setting! We stayed in Merlot cottage and loved the magical tree at the deck. Thank you for a lovely romantic stay."

"The rustic cottage was cosy and clean with wonderful views over the river. The inside braai kept the cottage warm as we had rainy days. Our hosts, Johan and Sandra, were extremely friendly and helpful. It felt like a home away from home. Our two dogs had a ball, and we will definitely be back."

"Such a beautiful spot on the river surrounded by stunning trees, bird life, frogs and vineyards. The setting was lovely and private. We did walks around the Sharon fruit farm, braai'd and picnicked and played games. Was a very relaxing weekend. Our four legged friend also had the time of her life being able to run around freely. The host, Sandra was very professional and let us know where everything was. Our cabin lacked an oar for the canoe although it was a little windy so we weren't in the mood for rowing anyway. Next time we will definitely come back and go for a row down the river. Thanks for the most amazing weekend. Just what we needed."

"It was an amazingly relaxing stay. The setting was beautiful, being able to go down and swim in the river was wonderful. The solar geyser was a life saver with the load shedding. To Top it all off Linda and Sandra were amazingly welcoming and lovely hosts. We are looking forward to going back."

"We had a unbelievable weekend! We just loved it."

"Great place."

"Loved this idyllic and quaint cottage. We had a lovely time just unwinding and bonding as a family. Lazy morning coffee and a book on the deck watching the river sidle by, card games around the fire in the evening and beautiful day trips to the surrounding vineyards made this a weekend to remember."

"We had an amazing stay at Bordeaux River Cottages. Will definitely be back."

"A lovely getaway on the Breede River. Very cozy log cabin. Bird life in abundance and lovely sounds of the river flowing whilst sitting on the deck having a braai."

"What a magical weekend get away. We absolutely loved the setting and the bird life. So peaceful and relaxing. Will definitely be back!"

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Fantastic place to recharge your soul in nature. Our host went beyond the call of duty to ensure that directions were perfect (WhatsApp photos were an excellent idea), and we received a warm welcome. Thank you Linda"

"Amazing amazing stay! By far surpassed our expectations. Sandra is wonderful and the accommodation had a lot of lovely extras that made is so comfortable."

"Very nice and accommodating hosts. Loved waking up to the sounds of the river, fishes and birds. Peaceful and tranquil"

"Waking up in the morning to the sound of the fish in the river, bees buzzing above my head and just peace and tranquility. One of the best holidays I've had. The staff was so helpful and friendly and made is feel right at home. Would go again in a heartbeat. Thank you so much for a weekend like no other"

"Fantastic getaway. Highly recommended"

"Went as a group of 11 in two of the three cottages. It is a beautiful setting amongst the farm, river and mountains in the distance. Cosy cottages - indoor braai area was perfect for the winter temperatures. Full provision of kitchen amenities and appliances, bedding (and good comfortable beds), etc - a real help for reducing our own belongings that we had to bring with, amongst other things - and for the price paid, there are few other places that can match it. Wooden floors were noisy to walk on (creaked) and bedroom walls not fully rising to the ceilings making it difficult to sleep without hearing another person moving/talking elsewhere inside the cottage, but otherwise a perfect budget getaway!"

"What an beautiful place this is. We had an absolute great time, It was our second year anniversary on the 11th of June and we went away the 15th of June, seeing that it was Fathers Day the Sunday we decided to take the kids along. We all loved the inside fireplace and the view of the Breede River outside. We all just cuddled up and spent some good quality time, would definitely go there again."

"Bordeaux River Cottages is the ideal breakaway if you're keen to disconnect from civilisation and the hustle and bustle of routine and city life - a truly spectacular venue for bird-watching, picnicking on a riverbank, walking through the orchards, or simply sipping something on one of the most magnificent river-decks ever! Great for family or friends to really re-charge batteries and get back to basics with Mother Nature."

"Loved it! We spent hours watching the birds and fish. We put up the hammock and layed down our picnic mat, drinking gin cocktails and swimming in the river. Such a beautiful, peaceful, tranquil setting! It was just the breakaway we needed! We will definitely be back."

"We stayed in the lovely Shiraz cottage at Bordeaux River Cottages, overlooking the tranquil Breede River. Surrounded by vineyards and fruit trees with the river below the cottage and hosts of birds in the surrounding trees, we had an amazing stay. We were fortunate to hear and see a fish eagle swoop over the river. We swam in the river, canoed, took long walks through the vineyards and orchards and also enjoyed a bag of sweet plums received from our host. We would love to visit again."

"We had a very nice relaxing stay. The cottage was well up to standard with everything that we needed. We loved the different decks that one can sit and relax with the beautiful view of the river and the farm. Our host, Sandra, welcomed us and made us feel at home immediately. We will definitely go back."

"Breathtakingly beautiful. A home away from home! We definitely will be coming back!"

"Absolutely beautiful place. We loved the feel of the wooden cabins which were fully equipped with everything needed. We will definitely be coming back soon and have already recommended it as "a must" to our friends and family. Thanks for a wonderful break away!"

"This was the best weekend-away! I did not expect the cottage to be so comfortable and so peaceful. I have decided to make the Bordeaux River Cottages my official holiday home. Perfecto. Thank you for allowing me and my friends to stay over. My year has been made. "

"A beautiful rustic cottage next to the Breede River. Thank you to Linda for all her kindness and help. We had a great time and would definitely go back."

"A peaceful log cabin with lovely views and amazing night skies. It was very clean. We had a stunning weekend. I can highly recommend it."

"Good place for a short getaway - tranquil with the lovely sound and sight of a variety of birds. There is access to the river and canoe from the cottage. It is close to the town and shops."

"We stayed at Chardonnay Cottage - it is about 3 stories above the river so beware if you have young kids as the stairs down to the river level have no gate and it would be quite a nasty tumble as it is steep. If you have fluffy dogs with you in January as there are sticky, barbed grass seeds in the field behind the house that get caught so tight in their fur that you need professional help to get them seed-free again (neither scissors nor shaver worked as the seeds were so tightly caught against their skin). Perhaps a tight shave of their feet and legs would prevent this. Walking through the orchards with the dogs was awesome and they had an absolute blast! All the important amenities are in place, from sunlight soap to bucket and cleaning cloth! It is very peaceful and enjoyable over all."

"We spent a blissful week at Merlot Cottage - what a relaxing stay. We will recommend it to anyone. There's a nice indoor braai if you cannot braai outside and a lovely view of the river."

"We stayed in Shiraz over New Year and had family join us in Chardonnay (the next house down). What a perfect setting. Teenagers played in the river, adults chilled on the various decks. Plenty of options for shade in the hot summer. The wind came up in the afternoon to cool things down and dropped at sunset making evenings around the braai stunning. We will be back."

"What a gorgeous setting! Al lovely log cabin, beautiful big Blue Gums to provide shade, multiple log decks to chase the shade, the river was just beautiful with canoeing and a rope swing into the water for the kids. There are steep steps down to the water though if that's an issue for you! The beds were so comfortable. We went with family and took two of the cabins and had the most wonderful New Year's ever. I can't wait to go back!"

"We always have an amazing time and love going back to Bordeaux. The cottages are not on top of each other but within walking distance. This provides all visitors with their own privacy. The canoes and fishing are a real attraction for my husband and the boys - a definite draw card. I enjoy the cosiness of the cottages and braai areas. The mountain surroundings with beautiful sunrises and sunsets and the starry skies at night all add to the appeal of this place. I would like to thank our hostesses Sandra & Linda for the great service provided. Bordeaux is a definite recommendation to anybody looking for a wonderful place to go away to."

"We stayed at Bordeaux River Cottages a while ago and it was absolutely awesome! We cant wait to make plans to go back for a visit. Most relaxing weekend we've enjoyed together as a family. We highly recommend them!"

"Bordeaux is a wonderful spot to get away from the hustle & bustle of city life with peaceful, tranquil surroundings on the river edge. The cottages are cosy enough and not too small. There are lovely deck areas for braaiing which we have taken full advantage of the times we had visited. Hubby even caught a fish this past weekend which he obviously needed to put back into the river. My point was that it was too cute to kill and eat. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have booked all 3 cottages during November 2016 and are taking our families away for a bit of a break from their hectic daily schedules. Thank you very much to the hostesses Linda & Sandra for the graciousness extended. We look forward to our next visit."

"Fantastic! We loved the setup - braaing on the deck as well as inside, not staying too close to our 'neighbours' ensuring some privacy, and having a beautiful view. We especially liked the fact that it was pet friendly so we could take our dogs along. We'll most definitely come again!"

"Wow!

"A place where you find peace and tranquility. The birdlife is beautiful with all the different sounds and I was pleased that I spotted an owl. The dogs had fun walking and swimming. The kids and adults enjoyed the canoeing. All in all a wonderful weekend."

"A lovely family getaway, particularly if you enjoy canoeing and swimming in the river."

"A huge thank you to Nicky and Maryna for amazing service at Shelly Beach Point Wavesong. I would recommend this getaway to everyone. Absolute wonderful weekend, it exceeded my expectations. Thank you."

"I can't give this place more than a 5 star, completely blown away."

"My son ended up going. Excellent."

"Very relaxing weekend away and friendly staff."

"We were at the Chardonay cottage for a romantic weekend. Arriving early evening on the Friday night, we were met and taken to our cottage by Linda, our hostess. The wind was terrible, but the indoor braai made it very comfortable. The Saturday morning was stunning weather and we went out early morning on the river with the canoe provided and a couple of beers, fishing of course! At least caught one bass which later went on the fire for supper. Sunday morning we received a SMS from Linda telling us that we can stay until the afternoon if we would like to. What a way to clean your head and restart your batteries. I would recommend to anyone that enjoys a good breakaway and loves nature. Photo opportunities are excellent. I have got the most stunning pics. So take a chance and book now."

"We had a wonderful weekend at Bordeaux River Cottages. We stayed in the Chardonnay cottage which is situated between the other two cottages and is also right on the river. The beds were comfy and the indoor fireplace was the highlight of our stay as it was just too cold to braai outdoors at night. It is very peaceful and we left feeling renewed and calm. Thank you Linda for all your patience and your professional hospitality. We were made to feel at home straight away."

"One of the best. I will recommend it to everyone. We didn't want to leave and will definitely go back for longer than a few days. We were in love with it."

"Very relaxing and beautiful."

"Excellent hospitality."

"I've visited Bordeaux River Cottages twice thus far and despite the different weather each time, the experience has been relaxing and revitalizing. It's a beautiful location, the various kinds of visiting birds are spectacular to listen to and see, and the cottage itself is light, woody, and more than comfortable. Taking a canoe down the Breede River was a lovely experience! As for the friendly and professional manager, she made our stay pleasant by communicating well over email regarding cost. For the price, it is an ideal holiday setting. I'll be back soon."

"What a amazing place. Myself my husband and our two kids aged 12 and 14 years stayed for four days. We were so sad to leave and definitely will be back very soon. Linda and Sandra were very helpful."

"Stunning views, peace and tranquility. Comfortable cabin, close enough to town if you run out of wood but this place was exactly what the doc ordered to escape city life. Next time we will remember our fishing rods."

"My fiance and I had the most awesome experience at Bordeaux River Cottages. The scenery was breathtaking and we enjoyed the privacy of the cottage. The cottage was well packed and everything is simply fantastic. Sandra was great as well, we felt very welcomed at the Bordeaux River Cottage. I would certainly recommend this retreat to everyone. Awesome!"

"We are a family of five and stayed for a weekend. My husband just loved the braai on deck outside and wanted to cook everything over a fire. The children loved the river and we all enjoyed the use of the canoe. Our puppy was very happy there too, and apart from the wind which came up it was a stunning weekend, relaxing and peaceful."

"Awesome Stay, very friendly help from Sandra."

"Amazing, beautiful, peaceful, relaxing, one can just go on. Comfortable with everything you need. We will be back in a heart beat. Our hostess, Sandra is simple lovely. Our fur-kids had a wonderful time with plenty of open spaces to play and run and beautiful walks around the farm to enjoy. Awesome place."

"Wat n lekker wegbreek naweek was dit nie. Ons het die rustigheid e privaatheid so geniet en selfs ons honde het n naweek om te onthou gehad. Die stappies tussen d wingerde was elke dag hul hoogtepunt. Bordeaux River Cottages sien ons definitief gou weer."

"Loved loved our stay at Bordeaux River Cottages. thoroughly enjoyed going down the river on the canoe and sipping sun downers overlooking the river each evening. Will definitely be back."

"Excellent fishing in river, caught a 9kg carp! Comfy beds. Lovely views from deck. Very relaxing and private getaway."

"A lovely setting however the cabin needs some updating, the crockery was chipped, glasses cracked, blinds dusty and a two plate stove was full of rust. So much more could be done to make the cabin more special as the setting is beautiful."

"Magic place on the Breede River. Well worth a look. Just remember the anti-bug juice! (this applies for any riverside dwelling including the Amazon). A really great venue to relax. Nice people as well."

"Dit was ongelooflik, dis net wat ek en my vrou nodig gehad het om uit die woelige stad lewe te kom en te ontspan in die natuur, kon nie vir better as dit vra nie. Baie dankie, ons sien julle somer weer binnekort."

"Dit was heerlik rustig en kan aanbeveel word."

"Bordeaux Rivier cottages was exactly what everybody living in the city should experience. The tranquil river setting is perfect. There is no need for TV. Just watching the birds, listening to their different sounds makes this experience unique. Even watching field mice running around in the bushes was the best ever. The sound of jumping fish at night was very special and then last, to walk around with only nature surrounding you makes this an experience to return to. 110% worthwhile."

"We had a wonderful stay. Didn't have the best weather but it didn't stop us from having the time of our lives. Cabin is well equipped and any nature-lover's dream. Great added bonus: we could take our family pet along."

"Had a good time. Just not very child friendly but still had a nice time. We also had to share the house with a family of mouses and huge spiders but guess that is all part of nature."

"This is definitely the spot to be if you wish to rejuvenate in absolute privacy and wake to the sound of birds singing. The well equipped cottage makes for a comfortable stay. This place is well worth a return visit."

"This is a lovely spot especially if one likes to have privacy and like to spend time next to the river fishing and canoeing. Another plus point is that we could take our little Dutch hound with us and of course the wonderful bicycle rides that we had. We can really recommend these cottages."

"We spent a wonderful three days at Bordeaux River Cottages. Definitely worth the stay!"
