Let’s set the scene: Close to Cape Town, a big ol’ historic farmhouse, Nguni cattle (the prettiest of all bovines), an amazing beach just down the road (5km), crackling wood fires, lazy afternoon braais, starry nights… Got the picture? Good.
Sleeping a grand total of 10, this gorgeous old restored farmhouse was built back in the late 1800’s, when high ceilings, Oregon floors, thick walls, wide passages and oodles of grandeur were still the order of the day.
The house consists of four large bedrooms (three doubles and one with four single beds), a classic farm-style kitchen, dining and lounge area with fireplace and braai, and a deep, wraparound voorstoep leading onto a sea of lawn.
In addition to the main abode, there's a flatlet alongside, with double bedroom, lounge and equipped kitchen. For the tag-ons there are two extra beds in the living room. A useful option option for teenagers and in-laws alike.
Both the main house and flat are kitted with linen and towels.
Adding to the convivial vibe at Delarey is the lapa - a social braai spot hogging poll position at the front of the house. A perfect summer evening, the sweet smell of Blitz, dancing flames, flowing wine…. We can see it already.
There’s plenty to keep you busy both on and off the farm. For starters, there's Yzerfontein's beach, a mere five minutes drive - long walks, whales in season, birdlife, a restaurant or two. In and around the farm itself, there's more than enough scope for walking (Nguni and an historic kiln among the attractions) and cycling the quiet roads. A little further out, the West Coast National Park is a pleasant day outing.
Old-school farm vibe, great location, easy to get to, space galore, Delaray is a brilliant group getaway in the making.
