Budget Getaways Review
The wife has been nagging you for a family getaway, but after scouring several boring websites (no names mentioned), the idea of spending a weekend holed up in an overpriced hotel in some cultural backwater has less appeal than a Zuma-appointed Finance Minister.
One: Sabie is definitely not a cultural backwater. Two: Gunyatoo Trout Farm & Guest Lodge packs serious punch in the budget category.
Set in the stunning Rhenosterhoek Valley just 40 kays from Nelspruit, Gunyatoo is nice and close to all the major touristy spots - Kruger Park, Pilgrims Rest, Sudwala Caves, among them.
This nature lovers paradise offers a wide range of rooming options: from rustic cottages to romantic hideouts.
The king, double and twin rooms all have ensuite bathrooms and a view over pine forest and trout dams. The king and twin rooms are linked by interleading doors and can therefore be booked as family suites.
Guests staying in the above rooms will be treated to delicious breakfasts and dinners drenched in house wine.
The family suite, family cottage and log cabin are self-catering units with fully-equipped kitchens, SABC TV, DVD player, and braai facilities.
The Fisherman's Cottage is a six-sleeper unit that's completely open-plan and eco-friendly - that is, no electricity. Instead, solar lights and gas-fridge and stove will power you along.
For starry-eyed lovebirds out for a romantic rendezvous (we can but hope!), the Studio Cottage, with its intimate setting and undercover braai is a good pick.
There's no shortage of awesome activities, ranging from mild to wild. Bird watching, chasing a cold beer with a game of darts at the bar, hiking, clay-pigeon shooting, water rafting, swimming down a gorge. As the name implies, Gunyatoo is a working trout fam, complete with processing area, hatchery, nursery, raceways, and two fully stocked dams for your pleasure.
