Budget Getaways Review
For all ye frazzled urbanites, the name bodes well. Stir in a high dose of ocean views and general calm, and odds are you'll be heading back to the city with your marbles back in the bag.
A mellow old holiday home set back from the sea fringe in Betty's Bay, House Sanity has a no-nonsense, yet nurturing persona - unlike that nasty Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Taking a general walk-through her inner workings, you'll find a double ensuite and two twin rooms on the ground floor - all opening onto the garden via sliding (and Trelli-) doors. The twin rooms share a single bathroom.
Heading on up the wooden staircase, the living area is where you’ll be undergoing the bulk of your weekend therapy. This takes the form of lazing around on the deck, catching yourself staring vacantly over the Indian Ocean, board games around the dining room table - with all the above washed down by a megadose of cheap red wine.
Take note that House Sanity is a TV-free zone; Nurse Ratched wouldn't have it any other way. Instead, there's a fireplace in the lounge, a well-equipped open-plan kitchen for group cook-ups, and plenty in the way of ocean and mountain views to feed the soul.
An amble down the road brings you to De Wets Baai - an excellent spot to scrape muscles off the rocks and let your kids and the kid in you run wild.
If you’re after long sandy beaches, you’ll find these a mere five-minute drive from the house.
Other nearby Betty’s Bay action includes a trip to the Stony Point penguins, a stroll around the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, or something a little heavier in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve.
Simple, easy-going and comfort aplenty, a getaway that's guaranteed to pull you back from the edge.

"We had a lovely 2-night stay at House Sanity. The house is very well-equipped (stocking vegetable oil, salt, pepper, all those essentials you sometimes forgets to pack!), and the fresh flowers on arrival was a nice touch. The rooms and bathrooms are downstairs, so there is a fair bit of stair climbing, but once upstairs in the living space the views in every direction are just wonderful."
