Budget Getaways Review

A pristine 1000ha bushveld setting, Mamagalie Mountain Lodge graces the slopes of the Buffelspoort Valley, and its crystal-clear mountain streams, waterfalls, secluded kloofs, zebra and wildebeest.

While the general ethos here is big on the outdoors and a love of nature, the spread of decent accommodation options is likely to keep you indoors for a lot of the time.

There are five private options to pick from: Mountain Lodge, Bush Lodge, Forest Lodge, River Lodge and Tranquility Lodge.

Best for a big bunch is Mountain Lodge, sleeping a total of 12. This double-story chalet has two double rooms, a third room with three-quarter beds, a fourth with bunk beds, and great views from the stoep.

Forest and Bush Lodges are both well suited to couples or families. Forest is elevated in the trees and comes with a Queen bedroom leading onto a timber deck via large sliding doors. The general vibe is treehouse-in-the-bush.

Bush Lodge is a combination of safari tent, wood paneled interior and stone living area. It has two bedrooms leading onto spacious decks that look over the valley (toddlers not advised due to the height). There's the added bonus of private plunge pool here.

Common to both Forest and Bush is solar power, indoor fireplaces, outdoor braai’s, extra beds if needed and magical settings.

River Lodge and Tranquility Lodge are both open-plan units with double beds. River is nestled among tall trees on the banks of a stream, with unique features such as double bath and outdoor hot shower.

Tranquility Lodge is bound to impress. Made for romantics, it’s suspended in the tree canopy and cantilevers over a river bed. This abode is made up largely of glass sliding doors, allowing 360-degree views all round. Adding to the appeal is a spa bath and a modern interior.

Big on nature and the outdoors, with creative accommodation to boot, Mamagalie offers something a little different on the Magalies hit list.

Guest Reviews

"A little piece of heaven on earth. Clich I know, but it is amazing. Tucked away in between the mountains and trees lies Mamagalie Lodge. Whether you are an outdoor-hiking person or a stay-in-and-read person, this lodge is perfect. Whatever your fancy, you are guaranteed not to see another soul for days. The ultimate getaway for romance, adventure and soul-searching. And if that is not enough, the wildlife, birds, monkeys and clouds will wipe your cares away."

"We had a fantastic time at Mamagalie Lodge. Peaceful, lovely, serene environment. Spacious comfortable accommodation. We had booked the bush lodge, but because it was cold the owners offered to accommodate us in the bigger and more luxurious mountain lodge at no extra cost. I guess that's what's called "customer service"! We will be back."

"The weekend at the Mountain Lodge was awesome! The decor and facilities are excellent and the host is charming and extremely helpful. There is a nice rustic atmosphere and it is perfectly suited for relaxing and being romantic."

"Very friendly hosts and a warm welcome! Cosy cottage - thumbs-up for sliding doors, windows, outside shower and braai! A nice view, but not overlooking the small stream. Unfortunately the rock pool, one of the main attractions for us, was filled with sand from the mountain. We enjoyed the privacy, silence and being surrounded by bush and a beautiful big old Wild Olive tree!"

"It was the most relaxed few days away from home. We enjoyed our little splash pool and without television me and my kids bond and chat a lot. Bathing was another experience. Lots and lots of bubble bath, glass of ice-cold mountain water and the view of nature! This experience was truly a blessing. Thank you, Giles and Melanie. We will come again."

"We spent our sixth anniversary at the Lodge. We had a fantastic time with all the privacy you could wish for. We loved every minute of it and we are blessed with new memories to treasure for a lifetime. Thank you so very much!"

"If it is a secluded break you are after, Mamagalie is where you need to be. Stunning Lodges, breath-taking scenery and raw bush that is so well-preserved with minimal human fingerprints. Giles is an amazing host that truly does go the extra mile for his guest but above that he has a vast knowledge and visible passion for taking care of both animals and their natural habitat. Thank you so much Giles, we had an awesome time and will definitely be back, just longer this time. PS: They sell jam at the office, I have actually considered driving back all the way from Kempton Park to buy some more."
