It started seven generations ago with the first Uys arriving at Middeldam, unpacking the wagon and trying his luck with a spot of farming. His efforts paid off, 'cause today the Uys family is still firmly rooted at this very spot, with farming still running deep in their veins - even laying claim to Bobby, the world's largest Merino sheep.
Besides the colourful history of this 550ha Overberg farm (15km from Bredasdorp), the recently renovated Middeldam Plaashuis is a sure treat for a comfy family farm escape.
Simply, yet elegantly furnished, the historic farmhouse sports a good balance of old world and modern. The Oregon floors and ceilings are still in place as are the old sash windows and a voorstoep second to none, with a 360 view across the Overberg’s rolling hills.
There’s a total of four rooms (two Queen, two twins), all decked with quality linen and towels. The two bathrooms are shared - one with bath and shower, the other with shower only.
The fully equipped kitchen is the hub of the house, with the living area alongside. There’s a built-in braai/fireplace in the kitchen, which makes for convivial winter evenings featuring enormous volumes of red wine.
To keep the kids happy and dad in touch with his rugga, DSTV is available in the living room.
Heading onto the stoep, the garden is fully enclosed, flat as a pancake and toddler-friendly, with a spiffy new Jungle Gym to boot. Newly added is the fire pit, know as Die Kraal, a fine spot for social evenings around an open flame.
Keeping the rest of the team busy isn’t going to be a problem. Head off to De Hoop Nature Reserve (30km away) or take a cruise into Bredasdorp for an art, craft and coffee shop trawl. There is also a good WiFi connection if you are having Netflix withdrawls.
The appeal of this farmhouse and its surrounds is confirmed by a recent guest comment from Paarl. “I couldn’t get my kids to go home after our stay at Middeldam Plaashuis.”

The view from the lovely stoep, the fresh air, the millions of stars at night, the unexpected delicious warm "roosterkoek" when we arrived, the extra something special in the fridge to make our wedding anniversary celebration so much more fun and just the genuine friendliness and helpfulness of Heidi and her husband, Cobus, are but a few of the reasons why we would definitely return to this beautiful & quaint farmhouse on the hill."

"We had an incredible time and the surroundings and home was absolutely wonderful. We certainly did leave revived, but could have done with a few more days in that tranquil setting! The house was simply perfect and lent itself to the peaceful break we needed! Heidi and her family were most hospitable and accommodating! We will certainly return given the opportunity!"

"This is a perfect place to come and relax. The house is beautiful with a full DSTV package and a lovely stoep. The kids loved the farm setting and wonderful lawn. Braai wood was supplied and we even got some awesome farm-style bread when we got there, yum! The bedrooms were beautiful and the beds extremely comfy. The kitchen was well equipped. On the down side there were flies everywhere. There was fly / mosquito repellent in a plug dispenser, but the canister was empty. Acquaintances of ours had stayed at Middeldam earlier this year and it was empty then as well. The house can sleep 8 people, but the kitchen and lounge is more suited to 4 people. A few pieces of furniture can be removed from the house, as they only clutter the otherwise perfectly furnished house. If it weren't for the flies, this would have been an amazing getaway. Yes, this is a farm, but I've lived on farms. There are ways to manage flies, even with livestock close by."

"One cannot describe the peace and tranquility of Middeldam. It is luxury on a budget and the hosts are wonderful. It felt like we left family behind. The quality of the beds and bedding is that of a very good hotel - sleep is a wonderful experience. It's dark and quiet and the veranda is the most wonderful place to settle in for the day. The kitchen is very well equipped and you truly don't need anything but your clothes to go and have a wonderful time."

"Ons het die plek gekies om as 'n basis naby aan De Hoop, Arniston, ens te gebruik, maar hierdie plaas het by verre die meeste van ons aandag geniet! Die shutter count op my kamera het aansienlik vermeerder die laaste paar dae net van op die plaas rondstap en al die diere, die landskap, voelverskrikker, windpompe en nog wat af te neem. Ek kan ook met die grootste gemak al die ander reviews wat getuig van Heidi en Cobus se gasvryheid bevestig. Hier is nie genoeg sterretjies op die review page om aan die plek en mense justice te doen nie. Ons het nog nie eers al ons rooiwyn opgedrink nie, maar as jy net op die stoep sou wou sit en kuier / braai / lees, dan is die ook 'n goeie plek om te wees met al die nodige gemak en goed ingerigte huis. 2 Van die mooiste sonopkokmste wat ek nog ooit gesien het was 'n bonus. Puik. 12/10."

"We really enjoyed ourselves away from the city. The setting is gorgeous and relaxing. Everything we needed was there... We only needed the geyser turned on and they assisted so quickly. I will definitely come again, but will have to make sure we have a 4 x 4 or double cab for the gravel roads. Thank you to the Uys family it is really a beautiful retreat and home away from home."

"We had a very relaxing and peaceful time on the farm, a great getaway from city life. There was a warm welcome on arrival, with biscuits and rusks for the first cup of coffee! We were thrilled to see the farm in action with the sheep herding ... the views are stunning and the attractions of Arniston not far away. The house was simple in design and very spacious with a nice verandah for sun downers. We will be back!"

"Breathtaking views and invigorating peace and quiet, take it all in from a wonderful old-fashioned stoep that wraps halfway around the house. Inside the charm of original wooden floors and high ceilings are complemented by sash windows and shutters. Very well equipped kitchen with an indoor fireplace/braai for cold nights. The whippets ran themselves silly on the beautifully maintained lawns. Loads to explore on mountain bike or foot on good farm roads. Ample bird life, prize livestock and beautiful fields of grain to stare at as you unwind. Cobus and Heidi's warm hospitality tops it all. This place is a find!"

"Had such an amazing stay at Middeldam farmhouse this past weekend. Loved the little personal touches all over the house. Everything was so comfortable and left us all sleeping later than what we are used to. We were two families of four and space was adequate and convenient. The home baked cookies were a welcome snack and an instant hit, as well as the eggs which was such an unexpected surprise. Just a few of the small, personal touches we appreciated so much. The only drawback was the cockroaches in the house but the house is on a farm so a certain amount of creepy crawlies are to be expected. Extremely child friendly and I would love to return some time in the not too distant future."

"Middeldam is one of those rare finds that will keep surprising you throughout your stay. It�s easy to see that a lot of love and care went into the tasteful and lush interior. We were welcomed with open arms by Heidie and Cobus and immediately felt at home. The house is superbly well equipped with everything you may need to ensure a comfortable stay. It�s not often that one finds such attention to detail in a self-catering place. A nice touch was the little biltong welcome packs! Relaxing on the stoep with an amazing view over the valley is a great start and end to every day and we can strongly recommend Middeldam Plaashuis. We will definitely be back!"
