Budget Getaways Review

Like your friendly host says, "Mooi Bly is not a 5-Star hotel, but it's very nice and peaceful for those who like to be in the countryside between vineyards and a beautiful garden."

On offer at this pleasant spot that's just a short N1 cruise from Cape Town and one of  few affordable options in this neck of the woods, are six comfortable Cape Dutch-style cottages with decent finishes and an African touch filtering through the decor.

Four of the cottages accommodate six guests, with the balance sleeping four and two, respectively - as such, Mooi Bly is well tailored to a family getaway. Couples seeking more privacy should request Merlot Cottage. Prices range between R300pp to R600pp (depending on number of guests) - not too bad if you consider the proximity to Cape Town and the resultant petrol and hassle saving.

The cottages are well equipped - "nothing worse than having only one kitchen knife," says Liesbeth - and by the look of things they are clean, spacious and cosy in winter. Linen and towels are provided, as is the first crate of wood for your private braai area and indoor fire place - if you need more wood, you can buy it.

Apart from the braai and wandering around the garden and wider farm, there is a swimming pool to keep hubbie and the kids occupied, an interesting two hour 'Vine to Wine' tour where you will learn all that goes into making good and bad plonk, horse-riding on the neighbouring property, plus all the usual Winelands attractions, from estate crawling to restaurants, museums, etc. There is also free WiFi in the cottages, at the wine cellar and reception area.

In our book Mooi Bly is a recommended option in the heart of wine country.

Guest Reviews

"We had a restful stay and really enjoyed our weekend away."

"Ons vakansie was absoluut fantasties. Die kothuis was heeltemaal voldoende en ek sal Mooibly enige tyd aanbeveel."

"This place was amazing! I loved the relaxing environment and the scenery was fantastic. I enjoyed the animals roaming around and waking up to the dogs walking around. They were so friendly. The family was so welcoming it felt like we were part of the family and not just visiting. I thoroughly enjoyed the privacy and the birds singing in the morning. I just loved everything!"

"My family and I had the most memorable stay. The gardens are beautiful, pool area great and the family cottage catered for all our needs. The staff are very friendly and I hope that I can visit again soon. You need to book in advance as these cottages are very popular."

"Lovely place for a weekend. Very hospitable owners and hosts, we very much recommend Mooi Bly."

"Amazing, relaxing weekend in a beautiful setting! Liesbeth is a great host."

"We'll definitely be back!"

"On arrival we were greeted from the stoep by the host and hostess. The house were clean, and very cosy. Our dishes being done and the bed made is something we did not expect. We will definitely recommend to friends and family. And we will go back. Thank you."

"My wife, seven year old twins and I all stayed at Mooi Bly for four days during a South African trip. Liesbeth and her family are very friendly and made us feel extremely welcome from the moment we arrived. Mooi Bly is set in a beautiful location, and the accommodation is clean and well fitted out. We particularly enjoyed watching the sun go down whilst having a braai, trying some of Eric's excellent wine, splashing in the pool, helping feed the horses (our kids loved this) and playing with the many dogs, who will come and let you know when its time for breakfast! We had a fantastic time and would thoroughly recommend it as a place to stay, particularly if you're travelling with children."

"What a jewel 45 min from Cape Town. Cottages are set far apart enough for privacy. Two swimming pools and lovely walks around the farm will be enough to keep you busy if you get tired of the cosy interior and warm fireplace. Bonus is that you do not need to go anywhere to get wine, Mooibly has a wonderful selection of excellent wines. Your hosts Liesbeth and Erik are warm, hospitable and make you feel at home the moment you get there. Cannot wait for our next visit."
