Budget Getaways Review
Far from your run-of-the-mill damp and weather-beaten beach shack, Mountain Mist is a spacious group getaway with a touch of colonial, dollops of feel-good luxury, and a chilled holiday atmosphere.
Set in open fynbos at the foot of the Kogelberg in Betty’s Bay, you have plenty in the way of open space and views towards the ocean.
A full-length patio to the front of the house sets the scene for chardonnay and crayfish (chicken wings for us plebs) at the end of a tough day on the beach, while to the back, in the lee of the mountain and protected from those Atlantic gusts, we have a thatched entertainment area featuring a (cold-water) jacuzzi for the boys and their JC Le Roux, and a built-in braai for the gals and their Black Label quarts.
Stepping inside, Mountain Mist is suitably furnished in a mix of muted colours and screeded floors. There are three ensuite bedrooms (double, twin and queen, all with electric blankets) that open to the front patio. As such the house can sleep a maximum of six guests.
The living area is spacious, with a large open-plan kitchen and lounge with wood-burning fireplace and flatscreen TV - DSTV "Family Package" channels included. The kitchen also has a washing machine & dishwasher, a must if the kids have tagged along with you.
Worried about your Beemer in the salt air? Don't be, there's a double garage.
Keeping you and the gang busy ain't a problem. In the unlikely event you can drag yourself away from this luxurious haven, the Penguin Breeding Colony and Harold Porter Botanical Gardens are both a few kays down the drag. There are some good hikes and walking trails in the surrounding mountains and fynbos, the beach is about 3km down the road, and there are various eateries and pubs littered up and down the immediate coastline.
“A combination of mountain and sea views, close to numerous attractions,” quips a happy guest. Add a comfortable house to the equation and we'd say you have a winning weekend by the sea.
"Thank you for a wonderful winters weekend away in this tranquil spot. We were blessed with stunning weather so got to explore the surrounding areas including Stoney Point and the Harold Porter botanical gardens. The house itself is very spacious and comfortable with stunning views. Thanks to the fireplace in the living area we enjoyed cozy evenings watching movies with the kids. We all had a great nights sleep with the added bonus of electric blankets on every bed. We will be back hopefully in the Summer holidays - we want to try the "cold" jacuzzi...but definitely a win for the Winter periods too! Till next time - stay safe."

"Mountain Mist is a beautiful, luxurious and peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is situated high up in a surrounding expanse of lovely fynbos at the foot of the Kogelberg mountains. A full length patio at the front of the house lends itself to a lovely wide view of the ocean and the shoreline down below. The en-suite bedrooms were a treat, with the electric blankets welcome on the cold nights. A roaring fireplace made the big front living area a cosy and warm place to put your feet up and relax. With the Harold Porter Gardens, the Penguin Colony, and the beach a stones throw away, this is the place to come to, to have a good break with friends and/or family"

"A perfect venue for a family getaway! There was a sense of hospitality right form the booking inquiry through to our return home when were were contacted to return something that had been left behind. Electric blankets on all beds and use of a double garage for cars and bikes are some of the extraordinary features we enjoyed. Besides the accommodation, the location and setting of Mountain Mist is perfect, even better than the pictures! I would definitely recommend for any family looking for a comfortable and affordable break from the hustle and bustle of city life."

"The position of Mountain Mist, close to the Koggelberg Nature Reserve, makes it a unique destination in South Africa. We were able to visit with family, and the outstanding feature for us was the fact that the layout of the house, together with multiple bathrooms made it easy to have our own space as needed! We loved it. The facilities and presentation of the home were upmarket with fine sheets and linen. There were several areas for communal eating including one table literally in the fynbos. It needs to be "discovered". Overall, Mountain Mist was an ideal getaway for us to spend time with family in a luxurious setting and also have space for ourselves. We had a wonderful time."

"A fantastic place to unwind in the beautiful surroundings of Betty's Bay. We sat on the balcony looking out and watching the world go by and feeling the body unwind. Set against the mountain the view out back makes you feel almost in the bush. The rooms were great, the courtyard was cool under the tree next to the Braai and the deck. A great shade spot in the afternoons. All-in-all a great weekend had by all, and we definitely would like to go back."

"I took my friend out here (with hubby and kids) for the weekend to celebrate their birthday. All in all we had a great stay!! The house was really well organised with lots of notes and instructions left around so it was always easy to find switches etc. Also the kitchen and all the rooms were really well equipped and we didn't struggle at all as one sometimes does when renting a house and then not having half of the utensils you need. The lounge/kitchen/entertainment area is nice and big so we had lots of space to hang out even when it was raining outside. The layout of the rooms and bathrooms is great and so we didn't feel like we were living in each others space all the time. There is a shop and pub just down the road as well as being just a 5-minute drive to the beach and the penguin reserve (which the kids loved)."

"What a perfect getaway quiet for a family. A beautiful house nestled against the mountain with gorgeous views of the ocean. We encountered a family of mongoose who visited a few times, and were in awe of the beautiful birds around the house. The owners have gone out of there way to provide a comfortable and efficient home with every modern convenience in the kitchen. I highly recommend to anyone who needs a break away from the city."

"We were a group of guys on a weekend away from our wives, and we found Mountain Mist to be a great venue. The open plan kitchen / lounge, where we spent most of our time, is spacious and bright, and the bedrooms are compact and neat. The entertainment area is very nice, and the jaccuzzi is a nice touch, but unfortunately it is a cold water only jaccuzzi, and the weather wasn't warm enough for us to be able to enjoy it. The house was equipped with everything that we needed, and it is close to the shops and about twenty minutes walk from the beach, so we lacked for nothing. I would definitely go back again."
