Lining the banks of a massive farm dam in the Schoemanshoek Valley outside Oudtshoorn, Oppi Dam Resort offers a flexi-package of accommodation. Furthermore, the farm lies off the main road to Cango Caves and the Swartberg Pass, making this an ideal base to the local sites.
Accommodation-wise, it's a healthy platter. Kicking off with the three chalets, these come in open-plan double and twin options, as well as a three- bedroomed unit (sleeps 6) suitable for a family or two couples.
All have equipped kitchens and living areas, aircon and views of the mountains and dam. The larger unit has indoor and outdoor braai facilities, while the two-sleepers have outdoor braais. All are equipped with DSTV.
Next, there are two self-catering cottages overlooking the dam and swimming pool and sleeping two apiece, with a twin and double bed option. These have private bathrooms with showers, a kitchenette with bar fridge, and aircon. As with the chalets, towels and linen are provided.
Moving on to Oppi Dam’s campsite, this is the nearest thing to glamping. Each of the eight sites come with private ablutions, a washing up sink, two bunk beds, lighting and electrical power points. Tents, cars or motor homes can be parked up alongside.
As far as immediate action goes, much of it is centred around the dam. Fish or canoe, swim here or in the swimming pool, take on a farm walk or mountain bike the local farm roads. There’s also a wine and deli shop, butchery and restaurant on site.

"The location is very good, well maintained. On the R328 route to Cango Caves but no traffic noise from the facility. Owners very friendly and helpful. Cottage-1 seem a better layout with kitchen and bathroom bigger and bedroom with a double bed. Cottage-2 has two single beds. Bathrooms in both cottages has no proper door that can close, bit awkward situation. Cottage-1 and Cottage-2 are situated next to the pool. Tent and caravan camping area bit further down from pool. Entire camping area very quiet with no noisy camper. In all a very nice peaceful stay and will go again sometime."
