Budget Getaways Review
Finally, a getaway that's both romantic and kiddie-friendly.
Dozing on the edge of the village, Orchard takes the shape of a storybook thatch cottage set in a lush garden and apricot orchard, with sandpit, swing, seesaw and jungle gym all right on hand to keep 'em little blighters distracted.
Rattling around the cottage, this is split into two wings - living area and bedrooms. The two bedroom, an ensuite Queen and a twin, are decked in duck-down duvets and percale linen.
The living area exhibits plenty country charm - exposed poplar beams, clay floor tiles, a fireplace to hold the winter chill at bay.
The open-plan kitchen is a compact number, with bar counter and stove. We say ditch home-cooking in favour of the decent eateries dotted around town.
Mod-cons come courtesy of DSTV and DVD player.
Step out now to the verandah and catch a glimpse of those lovely mountains and, more importantly, your lovely braai plekkie in the garden.
An added bonus here is Orchard's direct access to McGregor’s nature reserve and the casual strolls and longer hikes into the nearby hills. Too much hard work? In that case, roll yourself down to the village (500m) and tuck into a Banting-size pack of bacon and half a dozen fried eggs.
A cosy getaway that will hit the near perfect note among couples and couples-with-kids.

"We had a wonderful stay at Orchard Cottage. Everything was clean and beautiful and warm which was great because it was a chilly winter holiday! The beds and linen were wonderful and we slept like logs. Lovely fire to keep us cosy. The kids loved the play structures and playing around in the gardens. Petro was a wonderful host with all the extra touches that make a getaway special!"

"Apart from a noisy neighbor that was swiftly sorted out by the establishment there can be no legitimate complaint. Everything had been thought of by someone who clearly has an eye for detail. If you have young children this really is a superb getaway with the playground just outside well away from any main road. We were able to let our 4 & 7 year old freely roam without having to keep too much of an eye on them."

"Orchard cottage is a cosy little haven tucked away in the small town of McGregor. The cottage is very neat, chid friendly and homely. We enjoyed every moment of our stay especially our toddler who loved the lovely play area and sand pit. We will definitely recommend it as an excellent family retreat getaway."

"We had a great stay. The cottage is clean and has a really personal feel. The electric blankets were extremely welcome as the winter nights get cold. The only negative would be the weekend noise that came from the town-centre of McGregor itself. Besides that, it is well worth every Rand."

"We had a lovely weekend at Orchard Cottage. It is perfectly clean, has a lot of space outside for the kids to run, a really pretty garden and nice fireplace inside for the colder nights. We came back home relaxed even after a weekend away with two kids under four! Petro immediately helped when we had an issue and even accommodated us with a camping cot for our two-year old. We will return."

"My family of four (kids aged 3 and 4) loved this cottage. The kids play area kept them entertained for hours and the braai is great for getting everyone around the fire. Its well kitted out and excellent value for the price. We would definitely go back if we were in McGregor again."

"Orchard Cottage is by far the best holiday destination for me and my family. It is absolutely well equipped. The owner has thought of everything, even antiseptics, plasters, spices for a braai, paper plates, a pool to dip in. The water is piping hot, love the shower, the kiddies room has loads of toys and games. If it had WiFi it would be 110% but then I suppose the price would increase, and we wouldn't want that, as we love the price."

"We have stayed at Orchard Cottage several times now. We like the location close to the Robertson wine route and the quiet and pleasant surroundings at the cottage. We always self-cater so the braai with french doors leading out is perfect for us. Every booking we have made has gone smoothly without any hitch and we have never had any cause to complain about the state of the cottage. All in all a wonderful experience which we intend to repeat."
