Spread across an oasis of rolling lawn on the banks of the Duiwenhoks River, Paddasang River Farm offers a four-pack of gorgeous thatched cottages daubed in whitewash. Riverside living doesn't get better than this.
Before you drift off into weekened fantasy, a few essential items to include on your Paddasang packlist: fishing rods, straw hats, Gin, tonic, lemons, a good book, and Huck Finn attire. If you have a boat (there is a canoe provided) might as well also bring that along, 'cause the river is your oyster.
Looking at the accommodation, the four thatch units are booked on an exclusive basis to a single group - making this one ideal getaway for three or four young families or a gathering of mates - ten max.
Occuping centrestage is the Main Cottage. This houses a farm-style kitchen and living area (with fireplace) and dining room that serves as the communal living space. The cottage sleeps three, with one double bedroom and a single bed in a mezzanine area.
The Middle Cottage sleeps five and comes with double bedroom on ground level, a small room with single bed and another double bed in the loft.
Next up is The Boathouse, a cozy and compact unit with two single beds pushed together. Bathtime is al fresco, under the outdoor hot/cold shower.
Last up, you’ve got Cottage Four. Ideal for couples, this unit has a double bedroom, bathroom with shower and bath and small living room. As with The Boathouse, there's an outside shower.
All four cottages are nicely linked, with the Main Cottage serving as braai HQ and general social hub.
As far as outdoor entertainment goes, you’re spoilt for choice at Paddasang. Swim from your own private jetty (at high tide), explore the Duiwenhoks in either direction, take a trip down to Puntjie and the beach at the river mouth (about 30 minutes by boat), fish, canoe, mountain bike (one is provided), laze about on the lawn, wade into those G&Ts.... The options are endless.
Whatever sails your boat, Paddasang is as good as it gets.
