Budget Getaways Review
The cousins and their kids are out from Perth and you’re keen to rub their noses in it - just to prove, despite young Julius Malema, that good ol' SA is still top of the pops when it comes to beauty and local hospitality.
Trick is how to do this without blowing the bank. Hello Rainbow Glen…
No question, this relaxed and friendly venue in Montagu drops firmly onto the 'ideal for large groups with kids and dogs' getaway list.
With seven cottages dotted around the property, all within gesellig reach of each other, it also assures that you and loved one won't be sleeping on the floor.
Located a convenient river pebble's throw from the start of the Cogmanskloof Hiking Trails and bordering the Montagu Nature Reserve, the views onto Kanonkop are enough to keep you and the relatives stuck on the stoep for hours.
Built around a lush garden with spreading lawns, the cottages vary in size and sleep between two and six guests. Each has its own braai area, patio and equipped kitchenette, as well as linen and towels.
The line up includes: Almond, Pecan and Tupenny, all sleeping four with one double room, ensuite bathroom with shower and additional bunk beds for the kids in the living room.
For couples, there’s Prospect and Pennylane, each with double bed and ensuite bathroom and shower.
Finally, for the deserving host family (aka YOU), there's Garden Cottage sleeping four and Muskadel Cottage which has a double room and a second room with two sets of bunk beds. Both offer a few more extras and the luxury of DSTV.
When it comes to family getaways Rainbow Glen is hard to beat. There’s a fenced-in pool for hot summer days, plus a play area, with swings, slide, trampoline and monkey bars.
Add to this the morning feeding ritual of chickens, the resident tortoise and rabbits, you might even find some time for yourself.
If so, head through the front gate because Montagu has no shortage of action, from hikes in the spectacular surroundings to hot springs and the Saturday morning market.
And if you really want to impress your cynical Perth uncle, load him onto the Montagu Tractor Ride and take a ride up to the summit of the Langeberg Mountains - the man will be reapplying for SA residency in no time!
One thing’s for certain, you're gonna find Rainbow Glen fun and sociable, with options aplenty for gran, visiting relatives, toddlers, older kids and the faithful family hound.
"I had a great time. The locality and ambiance was good. The host was great. I'd go again."

"Rainbow Glen is a great place to explore Montagu and surrounds from. We went in a group of 7 and it was great having big lawns, a swimming pool and braai facilities to spend time together. For climbers and cyclists it's a great venue and the house with more space is great for longer more spacious stays. There are lovely views on the mountain."

"My friend and I had a 5-night stay at this very peaceful venue. The setting is idyllic with great views of the mountain and the lovely garden. We were thoroughly content with the peace and quiet. My three pugs went along too and they enjoyed strolling around the grounds in the pet-friendly safe environment. We were well rested when we left and I would be very happy to recommend this venue to anyone and I would love to go back again one day."

"We absolutely loved our stay at Rainbow Glen! The cottage was spacious, clean and neat, and had everything we needed. The beautiful surroundings made for a perfect weekend away. The kids had a blast, and between playing with the baby bunnies, the river close by and the swimming pool, they had plenty to keep them busy. We were very sad to leave, and are looking forward to visiting again soon."

"We loved this getaway. We've been to other places in years past, but it couldn't even compare to Rainbow Glen. The serenity of the place was awesome and the cleanliness was like a breath of fresh air. We absolutely loved staying there! We will definitely go there again!!"

"A fantastic nine-day holiday for my husband, myself and three dogs. A very friendly atmosphere with Dave and Tara. The grounds were immaculate as well as the chalets. Very safe parking and secure for our animals. We have recommended these chalets to all of our friends and will definitely be back this year. A wonderful setting overlooking the mountains close to the walking trail through the Fairy garden. Thank you Dave and Tara for a wonderful holiday."
