There’s plenty of history lurking in the walls of the Schaapplaats farmhouse - this rambling farm hails from the days of the Basotho Wars, and the sandstone homestead is believed to have been a field hospital during the Boer War.
These days things are thankfully a little more on the tranquil side at Schaapplaats; in fact, a few days here and those weary bones of yours will be as good as new.
Sitting on the floor of a gorgeous valley surrounded by sandstone cliffs, the farm is centered around an equestrian centre. This and a healthy list of other outdoor action will ensure a happy fam.
Horse riding trails, game viewing on horse back, riding lessons for kids, circular hiking trails into the surrounding hills, a full package of MTB trails, boredom is simply not an option.
Accommodation comes in the form of three simple farm cottages of varying sizes.
Golden Mole Cottage gazes out on the surrounding mountains from the covered stoep. Sleeping four, you’ve got a twin and double room, two bathrooms, a large lounge with fireplace and a separate kitchen.
Jemima Puddle Duck Cottage is well suited to a small family, with a loft bedroom decked out with a double bed and two singles. The living room, bathroom and kitchen are on ground level and lead onto a covered stoep and braai area. Keeping things cozy in winter, there's a wood-burning stove in the kitchen.
Guinea Fowl Cottage is a compact unit attached to the stables. Open-plan, it has a double bed, shower and loo. The living room comes with fireplace and the covered stoep has a braai area.
Schaaplaats is your typical holiday farm of old, the kind of place the kids will long to go back to. Simple, yet comfortable accommodation, good ol’ fashioned farm vibe and enough outdoor action to keep you at it from sunrise to sunset.
