Budget Getaways Review

Sons of the King Guesthouse is a typical simple dorpshuis on a quiet backstreet in De Rust.

Sporting a rambling garden with fruit trees and pleasantly decorated interior, the house has traditonal high ceilings (to counter that Karoo heat), and oodles of space to swing a cat.

It's well suited to a family or two (sleeps 7 total), plus there's the option of booking a section of the house exlusively, even if it's just the two of you.

Taking a scout around, there are three double bedrooms, one of them ensuite. All are decked with linen and towels. There's an extra single bed in the lounge.

The farm-style kitchen, with wooden floors and obligatory Dover Stove, comes with dining table, stove, fridge/freezer and microwave.

The living room has a scattering of chairs and sofas, while the patio and braai area, shaded by grape vines, are reached via double doors off the informal dining room near the kitchen.

The garden is fully fenced (Although the front wall is not very high); Fido is welcome to join the party, subject to prior arrangement.

As an in-town De Rust base, Sons of the King is an easy-going family getaway, with a few restaurants and coffee shops never far off.

Further afield you’ve got Meiringspoort and its hiking trails, Oudtshoorn for day trips, the Cango Caves and Swartberg Pass. Staying close to home, there's the option of a donkey cart ride and visit to the Donkey Sanctuary down the road.

Simple Karoo dorp living at it's best.

"De Rust is a very special little village and Sons of the King was a very comfortable home away from home that I won't hesitate to stay at again."
