Wine estate with five cottages

Budget Getaways Review

A stone’s throw (3km) from Stanford itself, and surrounded by fields of fynbos, rolling vineyards and olive groves, the historic Weltevrede Farm is home to Stanford Hills Estate.

On offer at this pet- and child-friendly estate are five restored labourer cottages that have come a considerable way since their original working roots.

Overlooked by the vineyards (which, by the way, produce a fine award-winning Pinotage going under the label of Jackons Pinotage), Sylvia and Brunia both sleep four while a Touch of Plaas sleeps two. All have fully equipped kitchenettes and a bathroom with shower.

French doors lead from the lounge onto an open private patio, with a braai and expansive views over the Stanford valley. Linen, towels and firewood are provided. Fireplaces in winter, good red wine close by, what more do you need?!

That all said, it now gets even better, with two newly-built units joining the pack, namely Oak Chalet (sleeps six) and Pine Chalet (sleeps four). Both come with full length verandahs, outside braai areas and great views over the valley. These spacious units both have two bathrooms and open-plan kitchen/living areas.

As a guest you have free reign over this beautiful wine and flower farm and its natural fauna and flora. Take a long stroll, enjoy a dip in a dam (trout fishing available), or pop into Stanford. A visit to the tasting room and picnic area, where you can relax on the lawn looking down onto the Klein River valley is a must. Between August and November you can even book a whale-watching flight, with take-off from the farm’s private airstrip!

Guest Comments

"First visit was May 2011 - and enjoyed so much that we returned November 2011. There were huge improvements - new shower curtain, new microwave, complimentary tea/coffee, etc. By the way, this is for A Touch of Plaas cottage. Had our 2x4 footed babies with us - they enjoyed it as much as we did. Suitable for couple alone or with baby/toddler and the 4-footeds. Back and front garden enclosed. BACK SOON. Left doors open all night..." (Rosemary Robins, visited November 2011)
"What a wonderful destination for a weekend away for our two families. The toddlers loved the space to run and explore and were intrigued by the aeroplane! Cottages are exceptionally clean, well stocked and the free firewood was put to excellent use! Lots to do in and around Stanford too." (Louise Gibbon, visited August 2009)
"This was a perfect place to stay. Perfect for all seasons of the year." (Juliet De Jongh, visited June 2008)
