Overlooking the fertile farmlands of the Hoeko Valley near Ladismith, Uitsig Farm has two gorgeous farm cottages in private settings, which we have a hunch are just the thing to soothe those weary city bones...
Hemelrand and Gelukstroom are a tasteful juxtaposition of rustic-Karoo-meets-contemporary urban. True to authentic style, both are off-the-grid; instead, solar and gas and candles will power you through your stay.
Each has two bedrooms (Queen and twin) and your host’s eagle eye for detail doesn't miss a beat. The beds are decked out in percale linen, the bathrooms (with bath and shower) are kitted with quality towels, the open-plan living area and equipped kitchen the cosiest of chill zones for that lazy so-glad-we're-here Saturday morning.
Also common to both units is the obligatory Karoo voorstoep, with views rolling over the dam and surrounding mountains.
As if this isn't enough, indoor braai’s and a fire pit under idyllic Karoo nights stand ready and waiting. Firewood is provided, as is a welcome basket of coffee, tea, rusks, milk... roosterkoek, cheese and jam! Nice touches, indeed.
Seweweekspoort and Anysberg Nature Reserve are both within easy reach of Uitsig, as are a number of easy farm roads for mountain biking, and the well-known Towerkop and Stanley’s hiking trails.
All said and done, we would be hard-pressed to leave our cottage. Gorgeous surrounds, top-drawer accommodation, tranquility galore, this one's worth the drive.
"Where to begin? The setting of Hemelrand cottage is, as the name suggests, on the edge of heaven; sweeping views across the orchard-filled valley and up the heights of the Swartberg and Towerkop, reflected in the deep cool dam below. Walk into the refreshingly cool cottage and notice the touches of true plattelandse gasvryheid ('country hospitality', for the Afrikaans-challenged); fresh roosterkoek, local cheese, homemade preserves and fruit from the farm, and even fresh milk, have all been laid out by our host, Narine. The same touch has also furnished the cottage - both stylish and comfortable - and with everything you might need. We had three gorgeous nights in to braai, drink wine and gaze at the stars, punctuated by distant lightning and shooting stars, the farm workers singing across the valley on Friday evening, and the stillness of the valley. Our days were rather hot (bad luck and a heatwave), so we sheltered inside most of the day, and took a drive through the Seweweekspoort pass and back on the hottest day (aircon!). Staying at Uitsig Cottages has been one of the best experiences we've had with Budget Getaways, and we can't wait to go again!"
