Budget Getaways Review
Whether for a comfortable and convenient overnight stay or a full romantic weekend of it, Wildebraam is a failsafe option for either individuals, couples or small families.
An enterprising berry farm in the picturesque Hermitage Valley just outside Swellendam, Wildebraam offers a single farm cottage namely Berry Cottage - and a separate Garden Suite. Both lie alongside your friendly host's own home, and overlook green pastures and dramatic mountain views.
Kicking off with Berry Cottage, a spacious and soothing abode enjoyed by folks from across the globe, is filled with light, thanks to plenty of glass and simple design. It's also filled with generous and quality touches, a bag of free wood, tea, coffee, etc. The bedroom has a queen size bed and is air conditioned.
The lounge and kitchen is open-plan, with a three-quarter bed and a couch that pulls open in front of the fireplace - all you need is a bear rug to complete the picture. The living area (with DSTV 'Select') opens to a wide patio with giant braai.
Besides Berry Cottage, there is the Garden Suite to accommodate guest overflow and overnighters looking for a shorter stay. Like the main cottage it's very comfortably furnished and has a lovely outlook. It sleeps two and is also air conditioned.
In addittion to this you'll find the newly added Blueberry and Cranberry Apartments, both located on the scond floor of the cellar with pretty impressive views of the berry fields. Both of these country-style units are open plan and fully kitted with all the bells and whistles - including aircon and DSTV. They can each sleep four guests is a combination of double or single beds. Each also sports its own undercover verandah with a Wber braai.
Sitting in a hub of potential activity (golf, mountain biking, hiking, restaurants, etc), Wildebraam also has its own attractions, namely berry picking in season and year round sampling of their interesting concoction of berry liquers and other gourmet delights at their tasting room.

"One thing that the owners of the Wildebraam Berry Estate have is passion! They honestly love what they do and it shows. We received a wonderful service and they created a very welcoming environment. It's the little things like how we were helped with directions over the phone and how their son waited for us at the entrance as we arrived around 7 in the evening. The tastings fee was included in our rate, which is a great perk and the costs for goods is reasonable - we actually purchased a few things. It was a pity that my boyfriend was recovering from a cold, so we didn't do any outdoor activities. We would definitely recommend the Wildebraam Berry Estate to our friends and family. The drive from Cape Town was easy and with lovely scenes, and you arrive at a friendly and homey place with loads of peace and quiet. Also, it was affordable. Every now and again we deserve a little treat and breakaway, but the truth is life is pretty expensive. We enjoyed our quick escape over the long weekend."

"This is an excellent place and I will definitely go there again. The people are really friendly."

"We did not plan to stay, but when we saw the berry season sign, we could not resist. Berry Cottage catered for all our needs and was home away from home. Even the two farm dogs were part of the welcoming party. We had a braai on the veranda with purchases from the local butcher enjoying the garden views. We picked our own berries, went for long walks in the mountain and returned to a clean unit which was very refreshing. We ended up staying for three days. Next year we will reserve in advance for a longer stay. Little bit of heaven on earth!"

"The new apartment was of the best quality stay during on our road trip heading home. Top quality hotel linen and mattresses ensured the best night's rest in a long time. The walk-in shower with bath was a big treat. It's perfect for a family with small children. The extra bed in the open plan apartment has a hideaway bed too and was perfect for our needs! Excellent facilities with the bonus of liqueur and jams tasting, as well as great and friendly service by all staff. We had everything we needed for the units are fully equipped and we enjoyed a braai on the weber. The tranquility of the farm was also a plus. We will definitely visit again!"

Getaway Reply
Dear Reinette, thank you for your comments. We are very privileged to live in such a beautiful part of South Africa with an amazing view, surrounded by the berry fields. We are pleased to inform you that the mattress has been replaced in June last year. Hope to be of service in the near future.

"We had a lovely stay and especially enjoyed the deli/tasting room."

"The Berry Cottage is fantastic, the tastings of products is great, the berry picking was also nice. However, there is some rubble and old farm implements just lying around and rusting, the farm needs a good clean up. The berry festival was small and not really something to make the trip to Swellendam worth the drive. The town of Swellendam is a very clean town and a has a great atmosphere. The Old Goal is a must.
