Budget Getaways Review

Lying 5km from Citrusdal, at the foothills of the Cederberg, Wolfkop is a 450ha reserve featuring four private cottages with views across the Oliphants River valley, and a platter of outdoor activities.

Donned in African art and colours, each unit features two ensuite bedrooms, sleeping four total - with extra space in the lounge for two more. The main bedroom comes with Queen bed, with two singles in the second bedroom.

If you've got a large crowd in tow, then the fourth cottage (Harpuis House) is your best bet, with five ensuite rooms and plenty of space for the masses.

Comfortable mattress and cotton percale bedding are common to all, as is both an indoor and outdoor hot shower.

The kitchen is open-plan and well equipped, including fresh orange juice in season and fresh coffee beans and grinder for the perfect cuppa.

Stepping into the lounge area, this has high ceilings, deep sofas for that obligatory afternoon siesta, and an open fireplace to accompany a fine glass of plonk in winter. Double doors open to a terrace fitted with hammocks and lantern-lit Jacuzzi (R35 a day), while to to the back there's a dedicated jungle-gym for the kid in you.

While us hedonist types at Budget Getaways will be hard pressed to leave the hammock there's a lot to do. Get up early (oh yeah?) and you could spot a variety of animal life, from duikers to porcupine and tortoises; you may even stumble across leopard spoor. Depending on the time of year, there are various flowers in bloom - make sure you get there in August and September for the classic psychaedelic daisy displays.

Hiking and mountain bike trails (bikes for hire if you don't have your own), fishing in the dam or river, canoe hire, San bushman paintings, mind-boggling rock formations, diverse fynbos, it's all there to be had at Wolfkop. And then there's the wider Cederberg Wilderness Area and Citrusdal itself - though not exactly a metropolis the dorp has a good steakhouse called Die Sitrus (what else!), a decent coffee shop by day, and the soothing hotsprings at The Baths.

Guest Reviews

"The cottage needs some maintenance but none of that deflected from the charm of the surroundings and the cottage itself. We loved the big doors that opened up in the bathroom - felt like one was showering in the bushes as the shower was an open one - perfect. The Jacuzzi was such a bonus in the hot weather - just don't heat it up! It has a well equipped kitchen and wonderful comfortable beds. We only arrived very late in the evening and our calls after 10pm were taken quite happily - thank you Nina. The service from booking stage to arrival was handled with ease and professionalism and all my queries answered immediately. Thank you Nina for also popping in to check that all was in order. We were very happy and will be returning."

"Wolfkop was the most amazing, magical getaway that was the perfect ending to a hectic year! With the most incredible view (from Boegoe Cottage) of the valley enjoyable from the jacuzzi and an open, pretty cottage, we had the most relaxing time. Unfortunately, we were only there for three nights, but we will definitely be back in winter for more!"

"My partner and I needed a break and this was the perfect setting as it was completely private and secluded with nobody walking past continuously (in fact, throughout our 3 days nobody bothered us at all). The rooms are beautifully laid out with double en-suites, all bedding and towels. The kitchen is fully equipped with coffee making facilities including creamer (seeing as we forgot to bring milk), ground coffee, tea and sugar. There were also ice trays which made having ice for a glass of wine easier. All braai equipment was there including a braai dish and potjie pot. The jaccuzzi over looks the mountains which was absolutely beautiful and tranquil. I would def recommend Wolfkop. I will be going back in winter to make use of the toasty indoor fire place as well as the jaccuzzi while hopefully looking at ice tipped mountains."

"My husband and I needed to escape for some down time and Wolfkop nature reserve was perfect. The lodges are well equipped and modern enough to be convenient without taking anything away from the surroundings. Everything was clean and microwave, aircon, DSTV were a plus. If you are looking for privacy, this is your spot, there is a reasonable distance between the cottages, and you do not bump into anyone, other than a hike, bike or venturing into town there is no need to leave your Jacuzzi stoep. Unfortunately I think the management have not quite found the balance, they are impossible to get a hold of once you are on the property. It is self service check in and check out, we saw absolutely nobody . The wifi is also quite weak, my husband had a Skype conference call for work and his only condition for our accommodation was wifi. We called the manager and sent emails to get some help with wifi but nada. When we tried to check out there was no response either, luckily we figured that we could just leave keys in postbox. Seclusion and privacy is always appreciated for a getaway, but when you have a problem with the facilities it can seem like abandonment. Basically if your looking for hospitality this is not it, but if you are self sufficient and need a place to getaway from people this is perfect. You will love the laissez faire approach."

"Really enjoyed our stay despite the bad weather. Just ended up spending more time in the Jacuzzi with a glass of wine. Brought the mountain bikes with, but did not find any cycle routes on the reserve. Will definitely be back again."

"Great getaway from the rat race."

"My boyfriend and i truly had an amazing time at Wolfkop Nature Reserve. Would highly recommend it to anyone that love the mountains. We did the hike on the last day and it was awesome panoramic views in front of the the river valley and to back of the wilderness area. Wood was also left at our cottage before arrival with the jacuzzi that was already nice and warm. We did not have time to swim in dam, but definitely will be back to Wolfkop to experience the fishing in the one dam. Perfect for couples as we had total privacy."

"Thanks Bernice for your warm welcome and the freshly squeezed orange juice. We truly loved this cottage with the added coffee grinder, hammocks, bush outside hot shower and your veranda with the fireplace was awesome as I sat in the jacuzzi with views over the valley, while my husband was braaing for us. Love you Wolfkop! Thanks Werner, we will be back."

"My wife and I truly enjoyed our stay. The cottages are very private with truly spacious views over whole valley - especially from the jacuzzi - and are well equipped."

"The place is very private - a huge plus for me. The place was spacious and clean. There were nice touches like coffee beans and a grinder, small provisions like sugar that we had actually forgotten to pack. It is a place I will recommend to my friends. I have been to more expensive establishments that do not deliver half the value."

"I booked this as a short romantic getaway for me and my better half, and we truly had an amazing stay. The facilities was really great, and we had everything we need. Although the cleanliness could have been better. The couches in the living room had stains on, and there were no hammocks as promised in the advertisement. But we made do. The jacuzzi was very clean, as well as the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. We will definitely be back even with these things not being perfect. The location was wonderful and peaceful. We were very relaxed, and enjoyed every second with a glass of wine. This place will be the perfect getaway in the summer and winter time, with a fireplace inside and outside. Kobus was very helpful and friendly, and I was very happy with his service. See you soon Wolfkop!"
