WUPPERTHAL

Wupperthal (300km from Cape Town) is a stage-set Moravian mission station, a place where neighbours do their best to love each other as themselves, where velskoens are made and Rooibos sorted amidst singing voices ringing out through the valley. Wupperthal is also a community where past collides with present – unofficial prohibition laws apply, but as we know from our studies of human nature, need is usually inversely related to supply. Other than the occasional harmless hustler looking for a dop, Wupperthal is a quaint village slumbering in Olde Worlde atmosphere.

Things To Do
  • Conquer the Wupperthal 4x4 Trail (tel 027-492 3410), reportedly a gruelling full-day experience for both man and machine. There is a shorter variation available for the lambs of the 4x4 flock.

  • Buy yourself a pair of red vellies at the local shoe factory (tel 027-492-3017).

  • Observe mission life coming and going while sipping tea at Die Lekkerbekkie (tel 027-492 3410). Situated in Leipoldt House, it’s the oldest building in the village; open during the week and Saturday.

  • Hike the surrounding mountains. The local tourist office is your contact for more detail.
