Budget Getaways Review

This must rank as the getaway with the lightest carbon footprint ever! Everything about this gorgeous spot is centered around being gentle on the planet, from being completely off-grid to making use of reclaimed timber and building materials, harvested rain water & solar power - all carefully put together to create a rather unique and appealing result.

Tucked into a glade of indigenous forest on an organic smallholding, the little two-story cottage has the most soothing views down onto the Gunube river valley and surrounding forest. The cottage sleeps two adults and two kids, with one queen bedroom on a mezzanine level in the loft and two additional single sleeper couches in the adjacent living area. There is a shared bathroom (with compost loo…if you’ve never used one, you’ll be pleasantly surprised).

Down on the lower level, there is a compact but well-equipped kitchenette with gas hob, fridge and all cutlery and crockery to use. The living area is comfortable and cosy and with the flow onto the deck, makes for a great place to put your feet up and relax. There is a braai area down below the deck.

In keeping with the sustainable theme, the farm has free range chickens, two hand-milked cows, a small indigenous plant nursery and a carpentry workshop.

Your hosts Roger and Karen have a wealth of knowledge of the surrounding area, sustainable living and are happy to show you around and get the kids involved in picking from the veggie garden, milking the cows and collecting chicken eggs.

Easy going, great location and an appreciation of what it takes to live lightly, this getaway is way more than just a night out in the country, it’s a real learning experience.
