Tucked away on a small holding on the outskirts of Prince Albert, Aardvark Cottage seems to make an ideal escape for a family looking for a taste of village life. Tastefully decorated, this farm-style cottage consists of one bedroom, an ensuite bathroom, a lounge area with a fireplace and a sleeper couch for another two guests. Outdoor living is well catered for with a shaded garden, a grove of orange trees and a swimming pool for the scorching summer months. Enjoy sundowners or a spot of fishing in the nearby dam as well. At under R300pp, Aardvark Cottage looks like it strikes a great balance between town and country, all at a decent price. Certainly looks good to us.

Thirty-four kays outside Prince Albert, Abrahamskraal oozes rich Karoo farmtradition. With a handy range of accommodation options it appears to be the perfect spot for that special family occasion. Forming the piece de resistance for your big event is a gorgeous 1921 Cape Dutch Homestead: filled with antiques, seven bedrooms, underfloor heating, a farm dam with windmill, self-catering or farmstyle meals on request… Lovely! For the overflow there's a separate cottage sleeping 4-6. Combine the two and you've got a party venue for 20 happy guests. There's also a bargain bush camp (R50pp) for your Cape Union Mart mates in their 4x4s. Scrumptious meals, birdwatching, stargazing, walking and mountain biking under big skies, no prizes for guessing where Captain Getaway will be spending his 80th-going-on-16th birthday.

A spacious and characterful-filled Karoo cottage with French country ambience, Repos Trouve (meaning 'True place of rest') offers a soothing  stay for six guests. The cottage has been lovingly restored and the owner's deft personal touch is evident throughout. Comfort hasn't been spared, with luxurious linen, ceiling fans and mozzie nets in all three bedrooms, and fluffy towels (bath and pool) in the bathroom. French doors lead from the main suite to a stoep and a Provencal garden filled with delicious scents, and where vines provide dappled shade for your al fresco dining - the fully equipped kitchen will be put to good use to this end. Eat your heart out Peter Mayle!
