If isolation is what you’re after, then Rhenoster Valley Guestfarm is going to blow your vellies off. You'll find it 60km along Die Rantepad, a forgotten back-road that was once the mail coach route between Sutherland and Fraserberg. The old farmhouse has been tastefully restored, with oil lamps (no electricity), simple furnishings and thick, whitewashed walls. There are two double rooms, two singles, a lounge/dining room, two bathrooms and a classic farm kitchen, with Aga stove that is kept burning all day during the freezing winter. Plenty to keep you busy in the way of hikes, mountain biking, Boer War relics and enough silence to put the rigors of urban living deep into your sub-conscious. As one guest comment goes, “What an oasis for a tired city soul.”

Situated about 48km north of Sutherland, Skurweberg is a rugged and down to earth farm catering to lovers of the great outdoors - from 4x4-ers (there's a dedicated trail to this end) to hikers, mountain bikers and general weekenders. The accommodation is in keeping, with a simple four-bedroom self-catering house that sleeps 10 and features a fireplace, electric blankets, telly with DSTV and all bedding and towels. With rates around R175pp it's a good value option. Dinner and breakfast is available on request. For even closer commune with nature there's a small shaded campsite spread along the river, with hot showers, a lapa and braai spots. A good alternative to the lacklustre options available in Sutherland itself.
