Budget Getaways Review

Set directly across the way from Stanford’s tiny stone church and Market Square, in an English garden of lavender, daisies and roses, B’s Cottage has achieved minor gem status in her short existence.

Only a few years old, she has the rustic character of a farm cottage that’s been around forever and a day: the honey-smell of thatch, earthy terracotta floors, a big open fireplace, a loft with a double bed tucked into the eaves, a lovely shower bathroom, old brass taps and fittings, lots of other country bits and pieces, a chandelier (with dimmer switch), a library full of books, jars with rusks and Cremora, grandma’s rocking chair in one corner, her old wireless and fancy tape player in the other.

There is nothing pretentious about B’s Cottage, no evidence of trying too hard. Like a favourite aunt, she is relaxed and homely, a quality that draws the faithful following back time and again.

Though B's only sleeps two, she has a slightly bigger sister - Dove's Cottage. Dove's with its outdoor braai area and hearty fireplace inside has space for up to six guests. Being only 40m away from B's Cottage, it might be well worth it to book both for a farmstyle getaway with a group of good friends.

And, flipping through the guest book, every visitor who has put pen to paper has clearly had a good time of the cottages and the pretty garden.

"A very cute and lovely cottage in the quaint village of Stanford. Bea is very welcoming, and the cottage is extremely well-equipped. My doggie had a ball snuffling around in the large garden. Stanford is fairly quiet apart from a few neighbourhood parties (which I'm sure are not common) and very pretty. The walks by the river are lovely. We will be back."

"Nice place with all that you need for small self-catering cottage getaway. Pros: Wifi (although it wasn't working when we were there), great value, location. Cons: Neighbour were fond of some late night and early morning music, shower curtain could have done with a clean."
