Budget Getaways Review
Occasionally ye old Captain Getaway stumbles across a gem that boldly ticks just about every box on the Show Me The Perfect Getaway show... Libertas Guest Farm near the Wilderness Lakes slots right into this category.
It’s hard to say what’s more appealing at Libertas: the superb accommodation, the breathtaking landscape, or the long list of action-packed activities on tap.
Let’s kick off with the accommodation, which now comes in five forms: The beautifully renovated and character-packed old homestead sleeping 10, The Dairy, a contemporary six-sleeper bearing little resemblance to it's bovine origins, and not forgetting the three latest additions, Friesland, Ayrshire & Jersey cottages.
Kicking off with the main homestead, with its cement screeded floors, raw timber, earthy fabrics, original yellowwood beams and ceilings, oodles of space and country views, this is the perfect spot for that large family gathering e.g granny’s 90th.
Three spacious bedrooms, two with Queen beds and the third with two singles (of course, 100% percale linen on all) make up the main sleeping quarters. Up the stairs you'll find a large open-plan loft room with bean bags, TV and DVD player, plus four more single beds and two extra mattresses - ideal for the sulky teen, rowdy kids and gran herself (if you can get her and the Zimmer up there).
Bathrooms? Plenty of options here, the grander among them with bath and shower and views over the garden. Stepping outside in your Crocs and Virgin Active towel there's an outdoor shower to satisfy the naturalist in you.
The farm-style kitchen is fully equipped and open-plan to a spacious dining room. The living room is fitted with a Hot Art ceramic fireplace. Leading off from here is an old-style voorstoep, where you could grow old gazing at the Outeniqua mountains.
There’s an outside braai area and fireplace, not to mention boma braai under a large oak tree next to the house. What’s more, there’s a “bottomless” supply of firewood.
Moving on to The Dairy, with a disctinctly modern feel to it, this cottage sports a great sense of space, with open views over the farm dam and the gorgeous mountains.
The Dairy sleeps 6 and is well suited to a small family, with a queen in the master bedroom and twin singles and a bunk bed in the second bedroom. The living area is open-plan to an equipped kitchen, and can be opened up onto a large stoep via stack doors.
A nice touch is the boma fireplace, built in the old cattle kraal in front of the cottage, which makes for long lazy evenings.
Last but not least, the new additions Friesland, Ayrshire & Jersey all posess that same charm that Libertas is famous for. Friesland sleeps 8 in a combination of two Queen rooms, a bunk bed in an adjoining room and a set of twin beds in the loft.
Ayrshire offers two Queen rooms, one with an added sleeper couch for the kiddies. The en-suite Queen room in Jersey boasts a romantic indoor fireplace. If the rugrats are traveling along, they can kip on the double sleeper couch in the lounge area.
Each of the newer cottages are fully equipped with lots of open-plan space to go around and a distance of about 40m betwen them. The layout has been carefully thought out to keep privacy a top priority.
The lawned expanse around all the houses is built for the kids to run wild. There are swings in the old gum trees nearby, and a volleyball court near the old homestead. Definitely bring along the bikes 'cause this is cycling utopia. The same goes for fishing rods, with good catches to be had in the farm dams (unfenced, so keep an eye on the little ones). The dairy and calves are a big hit with the kids, so don't miss this opportunity.
All in all, more than enough options to fill a generous weekend bunnychow.
"What a fantastic place to stay! Conveniently situated so that you are close enough to shops but far enough to enjoy peace and quiet. The unit was spotless and very well equipped and we enjoyed all the finer details. Highly recommend this to anyone needing a good break."

"I stayed in the Farmhouse with some friends, and absolutely loved it. The setting is gorgeous, the house stunning and perfectly equipped - not a single complaint! Great value for money, it's worth every cent. I was astounded by the size of the grounds and the facilities - plenty of games and activities, and close to a beautiful hike/walk to The Big Tree. Every want or requirement you could possibly have is catered for. Tranquility is easy to find here, and Wilderness is not so far away should you want to seek out more town related activities. I would go back in a heart beat, and wish I'd never had to leave! Definitely my first choice whenever I'm near Wilderness again."

"We stayed at The Farmhouse in the middle of winter as family of 4 and grandparents. Only one bleak day and for the rest the weather played its part. Booking was easy and we were settled in by Herman and Linda. The Farmhouse was a delightful place to stay - beautiful farm setting, peace and quiet. We did some trail running (and surprised a bushbuck along the way) mountain biking, acro branching and visited the Big Tree. Plenty to do at the Farmhouse itself too - we played hockey, volleyball, cricket on the expansive lawn and children enjoyed having a bit of exercise on the jungle gym. There were indoor games and DVDs provided for the blustery day so no one was bored. In fact we wanted to stay longer but someone else got in there before us! A great venue to go with 2 families with children."

"We recently stayed in The Dairy at Libertas Guest Farm and it was the perfect location to break my children out of their city living habits. The setting was perfect with plenty of space and the real feel of being on a farm. The standard of the facilities were excellent and the proximity to Wilderness and all of its activities was great. Our hosts were amazing and made sure we had everything we needed and were well looked after. We have already decided that of all of the stops on our recent trip this is the one where we will be returning."

"We spent a fabulous week at The Dairy on Libertas Guest Farm with our three young kids. What a pleasure! Linda thinks of everything from kitchen scissors to blitz and candles. The kids had a ball on the expansive lawn and toasting marshmallows over the Dover stove in the evenings. We'll definitely be back."

"Baie dankie vir 'n uitstekende naweek. Julle gesvryheid maak 'n geweldige verskil. Die huis bly regtig lekker en die spasie bo het baie goed vir die kinders gewerk. Selfs klein dingetjies soos die melk maak 'n verskil en ja, proe ook baie lekker! Hou die standaard so hoog. My seuns praat nou nog oor die voorreg om 'n koeie met die hand te kon melk."

"We had such a comfortable stay in the new Dairy. Linda has done a fantastic job decorating and the setting is perfect. Our boys loved the boma in the old kraal as well as seeing the milking in the dairy."

"Five star, five star, five star! There was a massive smile on my wife's face once we walked through the door, this place just reeks of class. We had four lovely days here with a wedding round the corner. There is just so much to do, but we were also just as happy to chillax at the house. We had a birthday to celebrate, the afdak beat any restaurant option. We took the option of a personal dairy tour too, spent time at the baby moo cow creche even feeding them their milk, and then also the huge herd getting milked, a big hit with the little ones. On top of this the hosts are top class people, so friendly and efficient to sort out the little quibbles. Massive storm coming for the wedding? No problem, here are some wellies for the mud! Now ... when can we come again."

"I had chosen this property for my birthday weekend and I was really very impressed when we arrived. So much activities to do one the property for young and old. We had a fantastic time and Linda is so helpful from the point of reservation to the end of our stay. We have decided that this will be our break away point and we will all be recommending it to all our friends and family. The highlight of our stay was the cows and playing board games by the indoor Mexican oven fire place. I could not have chosen a better place and had a fantastic birthday."
