Budget Getaways Review

In a region dominated by faux stone cladding, ugly wall-to-wall tiles, and the liberal use of gum poles, New Horizons is welcome relief indeed.

What we have here is a private 22ha farm 7km outside Magaliesburg (the dorp), that offers not only a pretty setting, but two creatively-designed accommodation units - a six-sleeper house and an open-plan two sleeper couple's escape.

A small taste of what you can expect… Rich earthy tones interspersed with flashes of bright colour, modern sunshine-sucking windows, raw concrete floors, exposed timber beams, funky furniture and decor, airy open-plan living areas with fireplaces, DVD and DSTV, fully equipped kitchens, comfy bedrooms with either King or Queen beds, pleasant garden views.

Drilling further into the nuts and bolts, the main house has two ensuite bedrooms, plus an interlinking bedroom with a Queen - given this linked layout, the house is best suited to two couples and a child or two (see guest comment below). Outside, there's a nice patio with six-seater table.

The two-sleeper cottage is an funky space with creative features aplenty. The bedroom is upstairs (king bed), the spacious open living area below.

Good news for Fido is that New Horizons is pet-friendly.

Stepping beyond the garden, the farm is circled by open grasslands, with lovely vistas towards the Witwatersrand Mountains. Easy walks, mozing about on your mountain bike, bird watching, a spin into the dorp, lazy lunches, that pretty much sums up your stay at New Horizons.

Chill-out spot deluxe by the sounds of it.

Guest Reviews

"Talk about tranquility, New Horizons will give you that. We loved our stay there and wouldn't mind going back anytime. This is what I call a Home away from Home. Sandro you have outdone yourself there, beautiful house, decor and ambience, I am most definitely recommending your holiday house to friends. Margaret and Chico very helpful, made our stay an unforgettable experience. Thank you."

"While the site does mention that two bedrooms share one bathroom, I had incorrectly assumed that the bathroom was between the two bedrooms. This was not so. The configuration is bathroom, bedroom, bedroom, in other words the second bedroom can only access the bathroom by walking through the first bedroom. Indeed, it's the only way to have access to the rest of the house without walking outside. I feel that this configuration is ideal for families where you are able to have young-ones right next to you. In my case though we were three adult couples, who are used to their own privacy, and if I had known before booking I would have elected to find another place to stay. I'd like to re-iterate that apart from this the accommodation and site was very pleasant, and staff very helpful. And, if and when I have kids, I may well come back now that my expectations are properly set. I'd give this 4 stars out of 5, but am removing one star for it not being made clear what to expect in terms of the bedroom layout.

"We really enjoyed our stay at New Horizons. We brought our 3 furry children along and they had and absolute ball! The energy here is magical. Comfortable and secluded! If you want to get away from it all - and just read or do nothing - this is the place. Also noticed many different bird species. Interesting, pretty place!"

"Well appointed, lovely cottage with everything you need for a short stay. Lovely setting on a quiet farm, away from the main roads. Love the funky architecture and dcor. Hope the pool/Jacuzzi will be working soon!"

"We had an awesome time at New Horizons and would gladly recommend this accommodation to anyone looking for a relaxing, quiet breakaway. The house was very clean and well equipped with everything that we needed. It is a child-friendly establishment with lots of space and we will definitely return for another visit!"
