Budget Getaways Review
This rustic little stone number isn’t where you'll find skinny cappucinos and high speed internet on tap. No Siree! This is rugged big sky country. Like the contents of a Karrimor rucksack, life here is stripped down to the bare essentials.
High up on the slopes of the Riviersonderend Mountains, circled by swathes of pristine fynbos, long views over kloofs and valleys, and just two kays from the kick-off for the well-known Boesmanskloof Hike to Greyton, Onverwacht Cottage No.8 scores high on location.
Getting there is via a stretch of gravel road, which can be driven in a normal sedan car.
The cottage is off-grid, translating into gas stove for cooking, no fridge (just an ice box) and gas lamps at night.
Taking a closer look-in, the interior is open-plan, with a Queen bed and separate bathroom with shower. All linen and towels are included.
The kitchen consists of the above-mentioned small gas stove, a sink, cutlery and crockery, and indoor braai-fireplace. A couch and coffee table make up the living area. Double doors open onto a large deck, with braai plekkie at the ready.
With a number of short walks, mountain bike options, rock pools, and a shared pool (100m away), there's enough to keep you occupied. And once you've had your fill of the remote, McGregor's urban charms are a shortish drive up the road.
So, whether you’re off to hit the McGregor-Greyton trail, or just wanna “rus innie berg”, Onverwacht Cottage No.8 could be your spot.

"If you're after a great base from which to do the Boesmanskloof hike between McGregor and Greyton, this is your spot! We had a wonderful stay at this rustic little cottage. The views and sunrises from the wooden deck are fantastic and the cottage is equipped with everything you need. Bernardo was helpful and made sure we had plenty of info on what to do in the area. I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to escape to a great mountain getaway."
