A cozy little love nest in on a farm in the middle of star-lit Sutherland is what you’ll find at Saffraan.
The newest addition on the Middelfontein Farm, this little stone cottage is best suited to loved-up couples looking for a hideout with little to no distractions, apart from the bright night skies.
Although self-catering, there is no kitchen sink which may make cooking meals a little tricky – Saffraan is right in the heart of Sutherland though so there are a number of nice eateries nearby.
With no electricity, you will be relying on a gas fridge, and gas hob in the kitchenette and a gas geyser in the modern en-suite bathroom. You can also rent a gas heater if you need a bit of extra warmth.
Apart from the indoor fireplace, there is also an outdoor braai on the stoep which is sure to be a winner during the summer months.
With such a romantic setting, we can’t think of better place for your next rendezvous in Sutherland.
"What a lovely little stone cottage on the farm Middelfonein just outside Sutherland. We just loved the fact that there was no electricity. Back to basics of cooking water on the gas stove and making all your meals on the fire in the 'vuurherd' - like in the old days. Early morning and late afternoon you take your tin jug (blik beker) and a rusk and sit on the little stoep and just enjoy the golden silence and beautiful Karoo nature. Our weekend was too short. Thank you Juanita, that you make it possible for us to enjoy the beauty of farm life."

"If you're looking for peace and quite, this is the place! We felt we were the only 2 people for miles and miles. The stone cottage is quaint, cozy and very clean. Our braai under the Saffraan trees was very special, we will definitely be back. Sutherland has so much to offer and the stargazing is unbelievable, we learnt so much from Jurg."

"The Saffraan cottage certainly lives up to its image of being a romantic hide-away under the amazing Sutherland sky. Our host Juanita was exceptionally nice and knowlegable about the area. The cottage is a very basic single room, without a kitchen basin. Cooking meals proved to be challenging. Polyester bed linen, single ply toilet paper, and a tricky gas shower made the stay feel on the 'cheap' side. We loved the whole experience but would search for something a bit more luxurious should we visit Sutherland again."

"Peaceful, and just what we needed to be far away from the maddening crowd! Accommodation was clean and neat and very private, definitely recommended for the nature lover with plenty of trails to walk/run on. Take your bird book, shrub book, tree book, stargazing book along as there are plenty to keep you busy whilst you enjoy the peace and quiet. The owner was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Will definitely return again."
