Budget Getaways Review
Spanspek has all the ingredients for a great weekend getaway: a chocolate box setting of manicured fields and vineyards merging into rugged fynbos-covered mountains, several farm dams, and a seven-pack of wholesome cottages.
The accommodation comes in the form of the spacious Berge Toe and Spot-On - both suited to a larger group - and a scattering of five refurbished worker cottages spaced adequately apart and filled with rustic traditional elements such as rietdak ceilings, wonky walls and open fireplaces.
Circled by green lawns, vineyards and fantastic views, Berge Toe is a calm abode of timber floors and simple uncluttered décor befitting the Alpine setting. When push comes to shove Berge Toe can accommodate up to 11 guests - good news for those of you weekending en masse. We would suggest reigning in this number slightly. The living area is a summery space drenched in dappled sunlight and views, while the kitchen is spacious and equipped with an indoor braai.
Spot-On is described as a deluxe abode with the luxury of four bedrooms (sleeps eight), two bathrooms and a wonderful veranda and braai area staring face-on to the towering mountains. We haven't personally checked it out but by the sounds of it the ideal place for a chilled weekend with the extended family.
Moving further up the track to the renovated worker abodes, all are rustic and tailored for a super relaxed weekend in nature. None have Eskom (yipee!); instead there's gas power for your shower, small fridge and two-plate stove. All have appealing outside braai areas (with a pile of free wood!), decent beds and clean towels and linen. The cottages sleep either two or four guests.
Not only is the accommodation nice and simple, there's plenty to do at Spanspek: good hikes and mountain biking, quad bikes for hire, glistening farm dams (stocked with fish and great for a dip), and varied small wildlife. There's also a seasonal farmstall which operates December to April, for spanspek and other seasonal veggies and fruit. And of course, Swellendam isn't too far down the road for a slap-up meal or museum cruise.
With breathtaking Langeberge views, plenty to do and blissfully not to do, Spanspek se Plek makes for an altogether relaxing weekend.
"It was the perfect long weekend getaway for our family ... Dad, mom, boys and dogs included! The boys had the freedom of the farm and tested & tried every dam on the farm while racing their bikes to get there! I loved the views and being able to read without cellphones and emails interrupting. We had lovely family walks on the farm as well, accompanied by "Kobus" the farm Lab (actually named Tobie, but our boys decided that he looked like "a Kobus"). Meraai se Plek was great, with everything we needed to make our stay nice and comfortable. And with the padstal close enough for a lovely breakfast or a quick milkshake ... Just perfect! And the owners were friendly & welcoming and we can't wait to go again!"

"We were looking for a farm getaway specifically. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and found this beautiful and picturesque place away but not far from civilisation. Upon arrival, we were met by Armand (owner) and showed us the way to our private abode for our three night long weekend. We booked "Piet Se Plek" which is a one bedroom place for two. When Armand saw that we had our granddaughter with us, he took us to "Sophia Se Plek" which is a two bedroom place at no extra cost. We have visited the Farmstall where we sat down for an excellent breakfast. Lots to do for children too. It kept our granddaughter busy from the time we arrived till the time we departed. Armand and A�da Swanepoel are the perfect hosts that anyone can dream of. Our stay with you will always be a memorable one and will definitely return again. Thank you so much for your personal interest in your guests' needs. I will definitely recommend Spanspek Se Plek to anybody that would want to get away from the hustle and bustle from city life."

"This was my third year in a row that we visited Spanspek se plek. i would highly recommend it to any family that wants to get away from the day to day�s rush. The no signal and no electricity makes it wonderful to have a face to face conversation or just to sit around the fire and chat. We normally take our blow up boats with and enjoy the relaxation on the dams. Spanspek se Plek will definitely see us again year end."
