Budget Getaways Review

Sharing the same rolling grass as the untouched rural Mdumbi settlement, Swell Eco Lodge offers self-catering in traditional thatch rondawels that are perfect for couples and families.

With soothing views over rural hills and the Mdumbi River's snaking curve, this is Wild Coast chilling at its best - fishing, surfing (great waves at Mdumbi Point), long walks, eating well, sleeping well, doing nothing at all but staring into gorgeous scenery, watching the slow comings and goings of local life... Soul food.

Your accommodation comes in three Swell forms. Well-appointed Duplex Rondawels with decks, sea views and ensuite bathrooms; Garden View Rondawels facing away from the sea (the kitchen has a sea view - good news for hubby), and featuring King and twin beds. For larger families, the Family or Honeymoon Rondawel (depending on your status) offers a more luxurious feel, with lovely loft bedrooms, another bedroom downstairs, and sea views second to none.

Common to all are braai areas, fully equipped kitchens, gas ovens and a fridge/freezer.

Meals and packed lunches can be arranged on request - nice option if you're planning on a hike to the coast and beyond.

Other activities on the menu include fishing, horse riding, kayaking and even surf lessons. A number of kids activities can also be arranged or suggested by your friendly hosts.

A real down to earth option with enough comfort and a gorgeous setting far from the madding crowd. Do it!

Guest Reviews

"The road was a bit of a challenge but the view was spectacular. Our hosts were very accommodating and gave us a warm welcome on a late rainy evening. The rondaval was beautifully furnished and clean. The only suggestion I have is if you are visiting during the summer months take plenty of Tabard with... the mosquitoes are relentless. Thank you Justin and Lee-Ann for an amazing insight into life in the Transkei."
