Budget Getaways Review
A cute little family cottage sitting alongside a rural road about 14km from Gansbaai, Wild Deer Cottage is well suited to a couple or small family looking for a chilled base that won't break the bank.
The cottage sits within a large farmstead, with direct access to a forested area and a small grassed garden with enough room for the kids to roam. While the passing road is about 50m away, we're assured it's not particularly busy.
Taking a closer look at Wild Deer, the modest interior is light and airy and compact, with the living room sharing space with a small kitchenette with open fireplace (as well as bar fridge/freezer, micro, kettle and two-plate stove). From here it’s through double doors to a covered patio at the back, with comfortable seating and a porta braai, and an outlook over a farm field and the forest beyond - expect occasional visits from the farm horses and cows.
The sleeping arrangements come in the form of two bedrooms - a double bedroom with Queen bed for mom and dad (that opens onto the garden via a glass door), that leads directly (no interleading door) into a smaller bedroom for the kids, with bunk beds and a play area decked with books, board games and a chalk board.
The bathroom (shower and loo only) is shared and accessed via the kids room. Towels are included.
Wild Deer is well situated to explore the wider area, with the Uilenkraalsmond lagoon a short drive away, Lomond Wine Estate and its mountain bike trails within easy reach, and Gansbaai and its Great whites a mere 14km up the drag.
What more can we say? Simple, hassle-free, unpretentious, and decent value.
