Budget Getaways Review
About seven kays from Swellendam, Wolfkloof Boerdery lies in a gorgeous valley bordering the Marloth Nature Reserve. In fact, the scene wouldn't be amiss on a postcard sent from the Swiss Alps. All that's really missing is Heidi and her merry band of bell-ringing cows. Or was it goats?
Wolfkloof offers a hearty spread of accommodation, including two tidy farm cottages, a dairy that’s been converted into a backpacker-style dorm, and a campsite for three tents. You may as well leave the electronics at home, as you've got NO cell signal here, and not a hint of internet in sight.
Kicking off with the cottages, Patathuis and Jansehuis are tucked away and fully equipped for self-catering. For families, Patathuis is the way to go, as it accommodates four in a double and twin bedroom, with an farm-style kitchen. Soothing views flow directly off the stoep.
Jansehuis is an off-the-grid cottage suited to couples (sleeps two). It's a rustic but comfy unit sporting paraffin lamps, gas fridge and stove, outdoor shower and compost loo. The interior is open-plan with a double bed, fully equipped kitchen and compact living area.
Towels and linen are supplied at both cottages.
Lying near the main farm house is Die Melkkamer, the farm's ex-dairy. It comes with bunk beds for four and is a basic set-up daubed in the dairy theme eg milk urns serving as bedside tables. Keep in mind that backpacker rules apply here, you may be sharing with others. Set alongside are the ablutions and communal kitchen and braai area with views over the farm. Good spot to while away an evening with a chop on the grid.
Set slightly away from Die Melkamer is Agterplaas Campsite, comprising three grassed and partially shaded sites for a night under the canvas. Campsite guests share ablutions with the dorm.
There's no lack of stuff to do on at Wolfkloof - a platter of outdoor action on the farm itself, such as walking and biking trails, a river with a series of pools, mushroom picking in the pine forests (seasonal) and star gazing second to none. A few kays up the road Swellendam has a generous spread of restaurants and coffee shops, heritage buildings, a golf course, and the lovely Marloth Nature Reserve. There is also an award winning cheese shop nearby.
Wolfkloof - a teeny taste of the Swiss Alps at a mere fraction of the usual cost.
"No doubt Wolfkloof is both beautiful and quirky with host Beneke offering down to earth, 'take me as I am', lekker old-fashioned hospitality and charm. This is a magical setting - Hogsback type, misty forest with glorious mountain views, fairytale dam and a river rock pool. Camping is far from an organised caravan park, more informal with space for about 4 families on green countryside. Ablution and braai/cooking facilities are shared with some of the accommodation but there is ample space and everything one needs. The barn makes for a great dining-come-chill area in the rain and has the added perk of kitchen & fridge facilities. A wonderful escape from the city and one for the nature loving country bumpkin. Added bonus was that the dogs and kids had an absolute ball!"
