Gracing those gentle slopes of the Overberg landscape, just a short drive from Napier village you’ll find Sandfontein. This working Merino sheep farm is home to a collection of well-appointed accommodation options, aptly know as De Skaap.
A potential epicentre for an en masse rural escape with family and friends (there’s enough room here to sleep 22 people!) or maybe it’s just the two of you needing a bit of fresh farm air for the weekend, whatever you go for, De Skaap has you covered.
Apart from the resident sheep, De Skaap is also home to a wide variety of birdlife, much of it centred around the farm dam, hence the accommodation makes use of avian themed cottage names.
Accommodation wise, let’s kick off with the two larger units, namely Visarend (sleeps eight) and Jan Frederik (sleeps 6). Visarend is a spacious farm house with four bedrooms (king and three twins), two bathrooms, a spacious living area, equipped kitchen and a kids playroom. Jan Frederik has three bedrooms (king and two twins) and two bathrooms. It too has a spacious living area and well equipped kitchen. Both units have covered outside patios and braai areas.
Kraanvoël is well suited to a small family with children and has two bedrooms (double and twin). The bathroom has a shower and the living area and kitchen are open plan. There’s a small patio and braai area at the front of the cottage.
Couples can opt for the two sleep options, Bloureier and Lepelaar. Both have double beds and bathrooms with showers. The living area and equipped kitchens are open plan. Each has a braai area and patio.
Common to all units are air-fryers, Wi-Fi, tea and coffee and quality towels and linen. There is also a central lapa area to gather for evening braai’s if you’re staying as a group.
If you’re after action, then there’s a good platter of activity both on the farm and within a short drive. Farm walks, bird watching and mountain biking options are in no short supply. Restaurants, coffee shops and galleries will keep you busy in nearby Napier. If you’re wanting to explore the Overberg coastal gems of Struisbaai, L’Aghulas, Arniston or Gansbaai, they’re all reachable as day trip from the farm.
Otherwise it’s feet up, deep breath and enjoy the space and tranquility that De Skaap has to offer.
