Budget Getaways Review

Yep, a real cherry farm in our backyard, in unspoilt mountain country 30km from Ceres.

The landscape is alluring and the cottages have good potential, but there is a health warning attached: Klondyke alternates between a wilderness getaway and Adderley Street at rush hour. Cherry-picking season (Nov-Dec) attracts a frenzied swarm of visitors, while the merest hint of snow in winter can trigger a similar deluge of humanity along the surrounding roads.

Out of cherry and snow season, Klondyke is closer to postcard perfect. The farm has three equipped private cottages and a small campsite with powerpoints and hot-water ablution block.

The Farmhouse (sleeps 8) is a rambling old house with four double bedrooms and two bathrooms with more than enough floor space to pack in a few extra kids. With a large living room and log fireplace, a dining area off the kitchen, also equipped with a separate fireplace, and an outside patio area with bench table and braai, the farmhouse offers a relaxed family escape.

Further along, Cherry Cottage has two bedrooms (A double and twin) and can sleep five. The furnishings are simple and fairly functional, the kitchen is open and the lounge has a fireplace that will be called for during the sub-zero winters. The bathroom is equipped with a shower only.

Smaller, more charming and probably our favourite, Duck Pond Cottage rests under a massive oak tree next to the farm dam. Like the other options it comes with a fireplace and though there’s only one bedroom, three can squeeze into the cottage.

All three cottages are fully equipped, including down duvets, towels and electric blankets. There are panel heaters in each bedroom and each cottage has a fireplace. Klondyke certainly is geared up for the bite of the winter months.

Apart from cherry picking and building snowmen, the mountains around Klondyke are made for serious walking and the ski slopes of Matroosberg are only 5km away. Neighbouring Matroosberg Reserve is open to day visitors and has a range of outdoor pursuits. You can also arrange a fishing permit for the nearby Lakenvlei Dam, which lies in an alpine-like setting.

Klondyke is an easygoing self-catering getaway but as we said, beware cherry and snow season!
