When last did you join the hordes at the Cango Caves, wrestle a croc and snap that obligatory pic of the missus perched upon an ostrich egg - praying for her sake it doesn't shatter under the load?
If the kids are itching to see the Caves, and you want to tick off this and a number of other SA life experience boxes, Kranskloof Country Lodge is right in the thick of the action.
Gracing the lower slopes of the Swartberg and just off the most pretty Schoemanshoek road, Kranskloof is a lush oasis that happens to be a mere 15 kays to Cango Caves, 2km from an ostrich farm, 12km a wildlife ranch, and … most importantly …. 800m from a decent wine-tasting and tapas spot.
Accommodation on the farm comes in the form of four cosy restored cottages, split equally between three- and five-sleepers.
The two larger units (Green Cottage and Blue Cottage) are free-standing and circled by gorgeous gardens, rolling lawns, large trees, and the rocky Swartberg foothills. Each sports a double and single room, a living area (with extra single bed), an equipped kitchen, covered voorstoep and outside braai area. Both cottages have two bathrooms. Blue has the only bath, while Green has a fireplace in the kitchen.
Lavender Cottage and Yellow Cottage are semi-detached and ideal for two couples or a family sharing. These cottages are open plan, Lavender having one double bed, and Yellow Cottage a double and one single bed. A small kitchen area and private stoep and braai area separated by a low wall. As with the bigger cottages, the surrounding lawns and gardens are a soothing escape from the Karoo heat and tour buses. So is the sparkling swimming pool and its array of loungers, umbrellas and kiddies trampoline.
All the cottages come with linen (including electric blankets), towels and DSTV.
Apart from the obligatory must-do's, a hike up the spectacular kloof from which the farm gets its name, makes a refreshing break.
A stay at Kranskloof is likely to have the whole fam beaming. “Wish we could stay another few days!” says one guest. “The best of the best," tweets another.
Dust off your Indiana Jones hat and get packing, we'd say.
