Budget Getaways Review

Situated in Karoo heartland country, 50km from Laingsburg along the road heading towards Seweweekspoort, Ons Karoo Plaas is a quirky and rustic, no-nonsense getaway for bikers, explorers, travellers or just about anyone wanting a budget stop over while venturing through this part of the Karoo.

Made up of a platter of accommodation options, which all centre around a communal kitchen and ablutions, the getaway is well suited to groups or a few families travelling together. For the summer months, there are two paddling pools for the kids as well as a plunge pool for the bigger folk…and believe us, in the part of the world you’re going to need it, as the mercury goes well off the scales here.

Looking at your sleeping options, they come in the form of glamping (equipped tents or caravans), two wooden wendy houses, a camp site and a backpackers room. Glamping wise, you’ve got the option of two, four-sleeper fixed caravans (namely Klipspringer and Baboon Ridge) and then one two-sleeper canvas tent (Kudu), each comes equipped with beds, bedding and towels as well as a fridge and small gas stove. They also have roof structures erected over them to provide some shade, a braai spot, and a lawned area in front of each.

Next up, you’ve got the two wooden wendy houses (Karoo Nessie and Towerkop) which sleep five and six respectively. Both are open plan and have basic kitchenette’s for self-catering, as well as a fridge freezer. As with the tents they have a lawned area in front of each. Both of these options have ensuite bathrooms with a shower and a loo.

The backpackers room, was once the ostrich shed on the farm. This open plan room houses four single beds, equipped with line and towels. The backpackers room makes use of the communal kitchen area. A good option for teenagers or a family with small kids.

Finally, if you've got your tent and camping gear. The campsite has seven large sites which can accommodate tents, trailers or 4x4's. Each site is grassed and offers partial shade under shadecloth. As with the other accommodation, the campsite also makes use of the communal bathroom facilities and lounge area.

Communal bathrooms have hot showers for ladies and gents, as well as loo’s and wash basins. Guests have full use of the central lounge area, where you can stock up on ice, cool drinks, braai packs, farm bread and fresh farm eggs. There’s a pool table and fireplace as well, a great place to hang out after a long day on the gravel.

Your friendly hosts are on hand to suggest a number of trails, back rounds and interesting outings to take from the farm.

Budget and position considered, Ons Karoo Plaas makes for a handy base form which to explore the surrounding area or an even handier stop over for those travelling the back roads in a group
