Budget Getaways Review

If seclusion, off-the-grid living (no Eskom), and total escape from humanity are high on your wishlist, then River Farm Cottage has your name written all over it!

This wonderful cottage sits in the shadow of towering Cederberg cliffs, with the Threeriver stream trickling directly past. Beyond that, lovely views up and down the surrounding kloofs and valleys.

While the main farmhouse (unoccupied most of the year) sits alongside the cottage, your privacy is secured via a thick tract of vegetation. The only likely disrupter to your peace and quiet will be the clickety-clack of cow and donkey hooves on their way to higher grazing.

In keeping with the remote setting, the 1.5km dirt track to the cottage is best handled by a high clearance vehicle or 4X4.

Taking a poke around the cottage, you’ve got two large bedrooms, the main ensuite (shower only) and with Queen bed, the second with a pair of three-quarters. There is a second shared bathroom, which comes with outdoor shower.

The living area is open-plan to an equipped kitchen, with gas oven and gas fridge. The cottage opens up via double glass doors from the living area onto a covered deck with comfy outdoor furniture. Just the spot to while away the day with a trashy novel.

Plenty outdoor action is on tap. Rock climbing, swimming - there's a clear water swimming hole in the Threeriver stream -  rock climbing, farm walks, etc. Bring your bike if you like rough and rocky farm roads.

There won't be much call to make the 25 kay trek into Citrusdal, but if you need to scratch the itch, there are a few restaurants, coffee shops, and the soothing Citrusdal Baths.

Lovely one!
