What’s NOT to like about Vermaaklikheid? This sleepy little hamlet is the ultimate bolthole for those looking to disconnect and drop off the map for a few day. There’s not much here other than a farm stall / coffee shop, a few friendly horses and the sluggish waters of the Duiwenhoks River.
Swale View is made up of two rustic little cottages, situated on a slope overlooking the valley. The two cottages are within a stone’s throw of each other, well suited for two couples or two families. (There is another house on the property, but you’re assured your privacy).
Swallow’s Dance is said to be one of the oldest buildings in the hamlet, its thick whitewashed walls and oregon ceilings add to the charm. The cottage sleeps three and has one double room with ensuite bathroom and a single room just off the front patio. There’s a cozy farm-style kitchen with a dining table and open fireplace. While the front patio is tight on space, there’s plenty of room to pull up a chair and enjoy that morning coffee, while taking in the rural views.
Moving along to Under Milkwood, situated just up the slope from Swallow’s Dance, this cottage has a double and twin bedroom with a shared bathroom. The kitchen is equipped with a two-hob gas stove, fridge and an open fireplace. The lounge and bedrooms lead out via double doors onto a covered deck with views out over the valley.
There’s firewood available to purchase on site, as well as some canoes which can be used free of charge (you’ll need to transport them to and from the river). On that note, the public slipway is a short drive away, or about a 20 minute walk if you’re up for it. The farm stall and coffee shop are 5 minutes walk up the gravel road.
If you’re keen on bringing Fido along, please enquire first, as long as he’s well behaved and socialised (there are other dogs on the property) then he’s welcome to come along.
Simple, well-priced and disconnected. Swale View Cottages makes for a great Vermaaklikheid break, dogs and all.
