Simple elegance framed by postcard views down the Franschhoek Valley pretty much sums up Courchevel Cottage.
What's more, this rustic-romantic little hideaway sits on the rim of the Chamonix estate vineyards. All that's missing from the picture is YOU - a fine specimen slugging back a fine red on the front stoep, Richard Clayderman looping in the background, the admiring glances from your loved one… The scene is all set.
Right, moving away from the fantasy, let's get down to the hard Budget facts. The farm has three rustic-luxury cottages and a honeymoon suite, for those with hearts set on a spot of romance. Each abode is cosy and inviting with the living areas centering around large fireplaces. Vineyard views offer an elegant touch of Provence - we would expect nothing less from the French Quarter.
First up we have Courcheval Cottage, with double and twin bedrooms ensuite. Cosy and inviting, the living area is open-plan to a small kitchen with dining table and centers around a large fireplace. Outside is where the magic kicks in - a comfortable stoep with built-in braai and scenery to choke on. Long sundowners and wors sizzling deep into the night will be the order of your stay.
Scott’s Cottage, named after the champion horse Scott, exudes equal amounts of charm and grace as its namesake once did. Also sleeping four, the open plan kitchen was once Scott’s stable. Decorated in a distinct equine theme, this charming little cottage also sports indoor and outdoor fireplaces and views out over the vineyards.
Die Ou Stal is a two bedroomed converted stables. Both bedrooms are ensuite, with one bathroom decked out with a bath tub offering vineyard vistas. As with the others, you’ve got an open plan living area with fireplace, and outdoor braai ready for sundowners.
Heart of the Horse is the couples choice. Spacious bedroom, sprawling bathroom with bath and shower and stunning views from the patio. A fireplace forms the centre of the open plan living room, and you’ve got a cozy braai area outdoors.
From the farm it's a mere hop to the village centre, making access to the loaded platter of fine eateries and coffee shops a synch.
Wine tasting, mountain biking, walking and running routes galore, trying your luck at trout fishing on the farm dam, a swimming pool at the main homestead, you won't have a moment to dwell on your suburban woes.
A neatly packaged getaway with good attention to detail, awesome outlook, and useful proximity to city and Franschhoek, there doesn't appear much to fault. “A lovely quaint cottage, rustic but comfortable,” is but one satisfied comment. We would tend to agree.
