Budget Getaways Review

Appointed on a working farm 4km off the R406 between Caledon and Greyton, Eikebos offers a picturesque and intimate camping experience.

With a grand total of seven stands, all shaded by majestic oak trees and circled by open views of rolling farmland and the Kleinswartberg, it's a far cry from your average municipal facility.

Suitable for bigger groups, team-building or weddings, each stand is equipped with it's own power point and braai area.

The shared ablution block is well appointed and fresh, with attractive stone walls and nice fittings - there are two hot showers and two flush toilets.

Also communal is the new covered lapa area - especially useful if and when the weather decides not to play ball and ideally suited for group functions of anywhere between 40-60 people. There's also the choice of booking the entire campsite and using the lapa (with a cash bar) and indoor braai for your special function, whether it be birthday, general event or even a country bumpkin wedding. Your host Riette offers a catering service if you do decide to go this route, with potjies, spitbraais or tailormade meals on offer - as well as the option of a bedouin tent if need be... Chat to Riette about the options.

Sitting 20km from Greyton itself, the Saturday morning market is a no-brainer if you wish to stock up on novel provisions (that is, other than what you would find at your local Spar), such as freshly baked farm bread, pestos and all manner of other home-made gourmet delicacies - who said camping has to be all toil and suffering? Come to think of it, since you've come all this way you might as well also sample one of the many restaurants and coffee stops - where you're likely to bump into one or other corporate buddy from the city.

Several kilos heavier and back under the trees at Eikebos, the balance of your weekend will be filled with long walks on the farm, including a number of biking routes both on the farm and in the surroundings (bring mountain bike), prodding the braai in front of your tent, lining up the next beer, broken here and there by the occasional dip in the pool.

By the sounds of it, Eikebos fills a gap in the much needed camping-in-comfort niche.
