Budget Getaways Review
Geelbos Cottage is a secluded renovated labourer's cottage on a typical Overberg farm at the foot of the Kleinswartberg mountain.
This white tin-roofed cottage lies about 1km from the main homestead and consists of two bedrooms and a small living area.
Geelbos is off the Eskom grid, meaning you'll be enjoying the glow of paraffin lanterns as night sets in. There's a gas geyser for your hot water and a two-hob gas stove for your fry-ups. The cottage is fully equipped and linen, towels and braai wood are supplied.
Looking at the photos we received, the country-style decor and fittings feature a combination of pine and oak units, colourful prints on the walls (dominated by a feline theme) and other simple, yet homely, touches.
Outside you'll find a small covered stoep, a stone braai area and wide open space, with an unobstructed view of the mountains, cattle, sheep, horses and a farm dam, which you are welcome to take a dunk in. A small plunge pool has also recently been added.
Nice thing about Geelbos is that pets are allowed, a drawcard for all you pooch-lovers out there. Comments from the guestbook are very positive, and include, "Heerlik!"; "We will definitely retun to this beautiful pophuis"; "The best accommodation of the whole Cape Epic."
Check it out - we look forward to your verdict.
"This was the best ever family get away, it felt like we rested and relaxed like never before. The surroundings are incredible, the cottage is like the most beautiful little gem hidden away amongst a beautiful paradise. The hosts are incredible, kind and makes one feel so special. I would recommend over and over. Cannot wait to go back."

"What a GREAT getaway and stay! Jannie and Andra made us feel right at home. The images to do not this place justice. The area is incredibly beautiful. The unit is private, at the back of the farm and you have your very own plunge pool and sundowner spot to enjoy on the hot summer days. Our dogs had such a jol in the dam, walking on the farm and just being free to roam. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs a break from work or city life. Go and unwind at Geelbos cottage, it really is a special place."

"What a fantastic getaway we had at Geelbos. This was our second visit to Geelbos. The first was in 2015, much to long an interval. With such friendly and hospitable hosts that greet you on arrival and make your stay just so much more enjoyable. This is a piece of Eden, with beautiful scenery, farm animals, birds in abundance, starry nights and wonderful sounds of nature. Very little cell phone reception, perfect. No TV, perfect. No city hustle and bustle. Thank you for a lovely stay. We will be back sooner this time."

"What an amazing place!! Our second time there, with 2015 been our first time, and way to long an interval. What any tired run down soul needs. Very weak cell phone reception, perfect. No TV, perfect. No loud music, racing cars, perfect. Only beautiful clean air, wonderful scenery, farm animals, abundance of birds and flowers. Incredibly friendly and hospital hosts. And very helpful. When we were to leave Thursday morning, my car wouldn't start, with a flat battery, my fault. Andra let me use Jannies bakkie and jumper leads. Jannie was away at that time. We can't wait to return this little bit of Eden."

"Geelbos cottage is a blast from the past - it is like visiting your granny's cottage on the farm. The two bedroom cottage is packed with hometown artwork, strewn with rugs to keep your feet warm from the concrete floors and lit with kerosene lamps and candles. The gas geyser provides instant warm water and the two-plate gas stove and small gas bar fridge complete the kitchen. The indoor braai (BBQ) area is a nice touch for cooking on cold winter nights but gets mighty warm in summer so definitely make use of the outdoor area instead. You have access to a private pool which feeds the dam where the horses come to drink. Pets are welcome and have an enclosed space to run around in, which is a nice if your city dog is not so sure about the horses. The picnic table next to the house is under a roof so it keeps the heat off you during the day. The whole setting is completed by lovely hosts, ample bird life, roaming tortoises and the option to walk freely around the farm."

"The cottage has lovely views and is neat and tidy. Has all the basics. The braai room was a surprise which means you can braai whatever the weather. Beds were comfortable. Shower was hot. Hosts were friendly. Cycle to Greyton was lekker. 22km. It is a bit small and one manouvres around with care. If you were 4 people and inclement weather you may find it a bit cramped."

I will definitely stay here again."

"We chose Geelbos very last minute for a quick escape out of town. We wanted somewhere less than 1.5 hours' drive from home, dog friendly and most importantly, budget friendly. My expectations were low, I simply wanted stars and space but was very pleasantly surprised. The setting of the little cottage is great, the privacy is awesome and the dogs were in heaven. Every thing you could think of was there. Perfect cost-to-comfort ratio and welcoming hosts. Ideal for a short stay to revive the spirits."

"My wife and I had a tremendous time at Geelbos Cottage celebrating our wedding anniversary. The cottage was very comfortable, clean and well equipped. The 'off grid' experience was so good for us both, and lighting candles and lanterns at night made the whole experience very special and unique. And the stars at night were absolutely phenomenal! Jannie was a great host who was willing to chat and show us around the farm and explain what everything was about. Very friendly and easy to chat with. We also really enjoyed the Greyton Market on the Saturday morning. Thank you Jannie for a great breakaway from the city. We hope to be back in the future."

"My family an I had the most fantastic weekend spent at the Geelbos farm. The owners were extremely welcoming. Loved the idea of no electricity and being alone on the farm just surrounded by nature. The highlight was that our kids got to enjoy feeding the animals, walking about alone on the farm to explore it and just have the advantage of being kids without having to worry about the dangers out there. Definitely worth value for money."

"Set in the rolling wheat and barley fields of a farm in the overberg, this is a totally private and exclusive cottage, and even comes with it's own dam, and splash pool. There are rugged hills immediately behind the cottage to explore, and even friendly farm animals too! It is also one of the most.comprehensively kitted out self catering accommodations we have ever stayed at. Whilst the setting may not be for everyone, we found it to be one of the most relaxing stays we have had. On top of this the rates are extremely good, the owners friendly and helpful, and at less than two hours drive from Cape Town, it is well worth visiting."

The decor is interesting and their is something new to look at around every corner. We loved the walks on the farm and that our dogs could roam free. Feeding the lambs was great fun. Jannie and Andra are very hospitable and only to happy to share their story an lovely farm. We learnt a lot about farm life and will be back soon."

"Fantastic! The most relaxing stay we've had in years. The fact that there is no electricity is absolutely a credit! There is a gas fridge and more gas, electronic, paraffin and candle lights than anyone could possible need. The splash pool was perfect and we spent a lot of time in it. It was also wonderful to be able to take our dogs. Possibly because of the dogs, there were quite a lot of flies; but there was bug spray and we kept the doors closed in the heat of the day anyway. No problem! Loved it and can't wait to go back."

"Wonderful pet-friendly farm cottage. A big fenced garden for the dog/s, a dam for them to swim in on the doorstep, and a plunge pool to cool off in. Lovely paths for walking and running. Highly recommended."

"An absolutely stunning place to stay. Jannie and Andra welcomed us and were only too pleased to offer all the help they could to make our stay as perfect as possible, which it was. The cottage and surrounds exceeded all our expectations. It was a real treat and so lovely to be away from traffic, TV's, computers and all the usual disturbances of everyday life. Back to basics but that said we still had everything we needed, including wood to cook and gas hobs, light by oil and gas lamps, hot water by gas geyser and a gas fridge to keep food fresh. Our dogs loved the walks around the farm and a splash in the dam. Stunning sky at night with the Milky Way as you just don't see in the city. We can thoroughly recommend Geelbos Cottage."

"This was better than expected! The pictures do not do this beautiful place justice! We were truly able to relax while the kids bottle fed the lambs and explored the stunning surroundings. The dogs were in their element, running free and splashing in the dam. Thank you to our warm and friendly hosts for sharing a little piece of heaven with us."

"We spent four nights at Geelbos Cottage and a week later we still can't get over it! It was cosy, relaxing, and a breath of fresh air from city life. No electricity, very little cell reception, but no problem! There was plenty to do; long bush walks, swimming, tanning, reading, and braaing. We didn't see another person until the day we left. Our 3 dogs had a blast too! We are missing the farm life already."
(visited Mar 2017)
"What I loved most is that my dogs were so welcome - no rules and regulations. I needed solitude - I got solitude. Leaving the place open and unlocked while walking for an hour through the surrounding farm land without any worries of theft was an added bonus. The kitchen facilities are minimal (the fridge is small and runs on gas and there is a two plate gas cooker) but who goes away for rest and relaxation to cook up a storm in the kitchen? Its not too far off the beaten track, easy to get to and only an hour or so from Cape Town. Soaking in the little splash pool at the bottom of the garden, sipping champagne while the sun goes down - MAGIC!"
(visited Mar 2017)
"Our welcome at Geelbos Cottage was warm and friendly and Jannie and Andra are extremely hospitable. The setting of the cottage is beautiful and the interior takes your breath away as the care and love with which it was decorated speaks of love and the intention of making your stay as comfortable as possible. If you want to get away from it all in comfort, this is the place to go. My little dog, Ava loved every minute as she was free to explore and just be a dog. The stars at night is an extravaganza unlike anything we will ever see in the city - there is absolutely no need for TV with all that natural splendor. Take your cell phone car charger with as there is no power in the cottage and the signal is a bit up and down. We will definitely go back to experience more of the Geelbos hospitality."
(visited Feb 2017)
"The cottage is extremely well equipped; I found everything I needed for almost every eventuality! The owners of the farm were very hospitable. There are some friendly horses and labs on the farm. The splash pool was brilliant and the fact that there are two verandahs to use depending on which way the wind is blowing means that you are able to spend time relaxing out of the wind."

"We had a fantastic weekend away at Geelbos Cottage. The setting is beautiful. The cottage is quiet and secluded, and set away from the main farmhouse for total privacy and relaxation. Our hosts, Jannie and Andra, were very welcoming - even when we arrived very late in the evening. They still took us up to the cottage and showed us around and how everything worked - such lovely people. They have put a lot of thought into what guests may need for their stay and stocked the cottage accordingly. In addition to the above, one of the best things about Geelbos is the wide open space for the dogs to run and the dam. Our two furkids had an amazing time, the one even learnt to swim! "

"What a gem to find! I can thoroughly recommend Geelbos to anyone willing to get away from it all. It's beautifully decorated, very much a home from home and isolated. Plus, our dogs absolutely loved their time on the farm. We can't wait to come back - in fact we have already booked for December and February!"

"We had a fantastic time, settled in nature - this warm and cosy cottage was the perfect weekend away. What made it even better was the fact that it is pet-friendly so our dog went along and had a royal time on the farm. This is definitely a place to visit."

"I actually don't know where to begin to describe our stay at Geelbos Cottage, we had the most relaxing time! From the moment we arrived Jannie and Andra and their two Labradors made us feel welcome on the farm. The cottage is warm and cosy with beautiful personal touches and you can see that the hosts thought of everything you may need for a comfortable stay. We took long walks on the farm and our two dogs were in absolute heaven having the open space and freedom to run around and well, just be dogs! I read a review from a previous visitor complaining about her dogs getting ticks while on the farm. I would like to just point out that it is a farm you are visiting after all and surely one needs to understand that there will be elements you are not exposed to when you live in the city, e.g. farm animals and probably the risk of exposure to ticks when your dogs are running around on the farm enjoying their freedom. We did not have the same experience at all even though our dogs are not on any tick or flea treatment. To summarise - the hosts are friendly and welcoming; the cottage is beautiful, well equipped, neat and clean; the setting and views are stunning and we had a fantastic time and will definitely be returning again and again."

"What a lovely weekend we had, staying at Geelbos. Our four-year-old twins were very excited to stay in their cozy, beautifully decorated room. The house was well stocked and surprisingly warm and well lit - so relaxing. The visits to the lambs were a real treat, and walks in the fields and hanging out with the last cow on her way to bed was beautiful and restorative. We were even brave enough to take a brief dip in the plunge pool when the sun was out; I'm sure it would be gorgeous to relax there all day in the summer. Jannie and Andra were so welcoming and kind! We really felt at home and taken care of."

"What an amazing little gem Geelbos Cottage is! The setting is just too idyllic for words, far far away from the madness of the city. It was lovely to hear nothing but birds all weekend, to enjoy the evenings by lamplight, and just be surrounded by the beauty of nature. Our hosts were also a lovely little couple. Jannie has such a wealth of knowledge about Greyton and its surrounds, and had us enthralled with his many stories. We would definitely recommend this getaway to anyone who wants a home away from home. Stunning!"

"Absolutely love this place. Awesome setting if you want to "get off the grid". We set up our gazebo and spent most of our time swimming and chilling at the dam (which guests have private use of). Owners are very friendly & welcoming."

"A real treasure. Geelbos has everything you could possibly need for some r&r. The cottage is fully equipped and the plunge pool is fantastic. The farm is well run and the animals are friendly. I spent hours bird watching, or spotting small wildlife and one is encouraged to explore the area. If one wants to escape the rat race for a few days, this is the place. I can't even say I missed having electricity, the cottage has a gas fridge, hob, lighting and hot water."
(visited January 2016)
"Most wonderful weekend spent at Geelbos! Longing to still be there, lost in time among the scenery with my loved ones exploring the fynbos or stoking the fire. Cannot wait to go back to revisit the very real, yet almost unimaginable, delightfulness Geelbos has to offer. The freshest air, loveliest views and little details make time stand still. I am however, watching the clock at home counting down until I can visit this piece of farmyard heaven again."

"We were always skeptical about advertising blurb and beautiful photos and advertisements on the Internet, that did not turn out to be what it seemed. So it was with some trepidation that we booked Geelbos Cottage for three days recently, just the missus and me and the two pooches. How wrong can you be? Geelbos Cottage was everything and much more than the Budget Brak had promised. The absolute perfect getaway to regain some sanity in a mad world! We are not going to elaborate any more than this, just read all the other glowing reports, which we endorse fully, and you will know what we are talking about. We will be back as soon as we can."
(visited May 2015)
"There are some establishments that claim to provide everything you may need for your stay. None of these can however compete with Geelbos. Andra and Jannie have literally provided everything! Need toothpaste, a spare toothbrush, a butterfly net, chess set, wood, firelighters, portable radio, needle and thread? You will find all on hand in the cottage. About the cottage, it is quaint without being cramped, and has personality. Think handmade quilts, eccentric artwork and personal touches that bring a smile to your face. It is also in the most beautiful setting imaginable. Rolling hills, superb fynbos and an abundance of bird life are just outside the door. The peace and quiet will relax any weary city-dweller looking to restore their soul. There are friendly dogs and horses (yes, horses) who will gladly make you feel welcome and while I was there also the cutest lambs ever. Andra and Jannie are the most welcoming and generous hosts and make you feel so at home, you almost don't want to leave. Indulge in some light exercise by walking one of the farm trails, visit one of the surrounding towns or just relax on the stoep with some wine and watch the mountains and sky change colour as the sun dips slowly towards the horizon. This must be a little piece of paradise. I will certainly be back."

"To get off the grid completely, to get your mind and soul back in line, this is the place for you! Peaceful, tranquil setting amongst protea's, fynbos, Blue Cranes and mountain views. Fabulous for nature walks and if you so feel, help out around the farm by bottle feeding lambs. Just relax and unwind. We highly recommend Geelbos Cottage."

"Our second trip to Geelbos Cottage was every bit as magical as our first, only this time it was hot! July wasn't the time for dam swimming, but this visit was all about that. We basked in the sunshine while dipping frequently into both the pool and the dam, with our dogs discovering their passion for swimming too. Starry nights, delicious braais and long summer days were filled with holiday cheer, good conversation and ultimate relaxation. We spent hours sitting and looking at the surrounds, glass of wine in hand. Our five nights went quickly and we will certainly be back. This visit also saw us venturing to neighbouring town, Greyton, it's so close by, just a quick drive for your essentials and where the feeling of relaxation only continues. Definitely the place to be for a friendly, chilled vibe. The cottage, just like before, catered to our every need and we left feeling so well rested and ready to tackle the new year. Here's looking forward to memories made there in 2016. Thank you so much to Andra and Jannie for having us. See you soon."

"I am almost afraid to let people know how absolutely fabulous Geelbos Cottage is, because then it will be harder for us to get another booking! We have stayed in many Budget Getaways' properties and this one is head and shoulders above the rest. The setting is magnificent and very private, the cottage is cute and cosy with lovely personal touches, the hosts make you feel like family; even the cows, sheep and horses are friendly! There is absolutely nothing that I could fault. We stayed for six nights and except for two brief trips into Caledon and Greyton (both conveniently nearby) we had everything we needed at the cottage and on the farm. An absolutely idyllic place, and I can't wait to go back again."

"A nice place not far from Greyton, great place for my dogs, sheep everywhere, a dam to swim and play with the farm dog Caesar. An abundance of ticks caused some headaches, but you surely can't blame it on the location. Quite a picturesque setting with nice views. No electricity in the small, cozy cottage, and though it was cold and without a indoor fireplace the cottage was comfortably warm. We got what we were looking for: Plenty of space and solitude and walks on the farm roads."

"Absolute gem if you want to escape technology and play among the stars. Very romantic setup, peace and tranquil. Almost felt like we were the only people on the planet for a day and it felt like heaven! My poodle of course had the time of her life but just a warning for ticks and take precaution - we went in May and when we got home she was infested, although I bet she felt it was still worth it!"

"Our third visit to this fun cottage. We enjoyed our three night stay, and will return! The fynbos and wild flowers were the highlight of this visit."

"Geelbos cottage is on our list of favourites - we plan to return as often as possible! This visit was perfect with sunny days, snow on the mountains, and two very happy people!"

"We loved this farm from the moment we left the main road and dipped down into the hidden valley. It is a long time since we have seen a farm as well run and tidy. The cottage was really fun, and we were made to feel so welcome. We were very impressed with all the personal touches - Jannie and Andra had thought of every need and also spoilt us with beautiful flowers and the best farm fresh tomatoes. We hope to be back often!"

"Having had the opportunity to experience a childhood on our family farm without electricity this is the place where family bonds, dogs become dogs again and the simplicity of life is once again mixed with the love with which this cottage has been set up. A 100% concentrated selection to enjoy nature, the natural Jacuzzi, braais and board games. Wow guys thank you so much for the opportunity to have shared your Eden!"

"One of the best getaways in the Western Cape. There is so much to see and do on this magnificent farm which is owned by equally magnificent people. We will go back again and again if only to slow down and remember what is important in life - not many places do this as well as Geelbos. Brilliant."

"We visited Geelbos Cottage over December and LOVED IT! Not only was our dog welcome (and this says a lot seeing that he is of a breed that has been notoriously and wrongfully portrayed as vicious and aggressive). Ozzy loved the farm dogs and he and Ceasar made friends instantly! The horses and sheep in the neighbouring camp, along with the resident peacocks added to the setting of the cottage and its beautiful surrounds. The cottage itself is lovely and has pretty much everything one can think of - we lacked for nothing! Jannie and Andra were very welcoming and made our stay extra special with a sighting of rare Blue Crane twins! We will def be back in the next few months!"

"Just Great! Oh so lovely for all of us - toddler and dog in tow. Were so pleased to see how well behaved our dog was on the farm and with all the animals - as this is really a place to respect! Jannie and Andra, thanks so much for your friendliness, hospitality, and adding fun to our trip - your cottage is gorgeous and your farm amazing! We're already telling everybody! Best wishes!"

"This very cute cottage is beautifully situated with nothing but mountains and fields surrounding it. Not only is the cottage very well stocked, beautifully decorated and comfortable, the hosts are also welcoming and very friendly. Our dog ran wild, we enjoyed the views, and can't wait to go back again."

"The little cottage at Geelbos was an absolute find! Equipped with everything we needed and more we were able to completely relax and take in the peaceful surroundings! Great place to rejuvenate the soul! It was also fantastic that we could take our puppies with us and they absolutely loved the experience. We'll definitely go back!"

"What an amazing farm! The owners are generous and welcoming. Real Afrikaans hospitality. The cottage is really very well equipped and the farm dam a pleaure to swim in. If you have a dog, take him - it's canine heaven."

"Doggy heaven, but make sure you Frontline your dogs very well before going, as they love playing in the fynbos around the dam."

"What a wonderful hidden treasure we have found ourselves!! It felt like we were away for weeks. Our two four-legged children could not get enough and are already begging to go back. So you will definately see us soon! THANKS."

"Wat 'n ongelooflike naweek! Geelbos Cottage is pragtig en baie keurig ingerig. Ons het 'n fantastiese tyd gehad. Ons het heerlik geswem, gestap, gebraai en relax. Die uitsig is volmaak en die perde en beeste dra by tot 'n pragtige plaas-scene. Ek sal hierdie getaway vir almal aanbeveel wat die perfekte naweek in die platteland wil geniet!"

"This cottage has everything! Beautifully decorated and homely. You don't have to worry that there is no electricity, because there is a gas shower, fridge, hot plate etc. Dogs loved it! We'll definitely be back..."
