Budget Getaways Review

While not strictly something you’d find while rummaging in the budget basket, Fiddlewood Fields grabbed our attention as a beautifully presented getaway, at a reasonable price point.

Let’s face it, whether you’re hitting the festival, needing a stopover enroute to the Wild Coast or dropping kids at boarding school (you need good value accommodation after paying those school fees!), Grahamstown / Makhanda is going to come up on your national travel destinations list at some stage.

Located in the leafy suburbs around Rhodes University, Fiddlewood Fields is set within a spectacular, spacious garden. The accommodation comes in the form of a two-sleeper room and four garden cottages. The Blue Room (sleeps 2) forms part of the main house, but has its own private entrance, kitchenette, ensuite bathroom and patio.

Moving along to the four cottages. Rose (sleeps 2-3), Butterfly (sleeps 5), Sunbird (sleeps 5) and Garden Cottage (sleeps 2). All apart from Garden Cottage are free-standing units, while the latter forms part of the main homestead, but with a private entrance. Butterfly and Sunbird are the bigger units and sleep five, with king and twin beds in a mezzanine bedroom. Rose and Garden Cottage are well suited to couples, but could accommodate a small child on an additional single if needed.

All have DSTV, WiFi, ensuite bathrooms and kitchenettes. Each unit also has a patio leading out onto the garden. Quality linen, towels and electric blankets are included.

Parking is off-street and secure.

As you most likely know, there’s no shortage of cultural to-do’s in Grahamstown / Makhanda, which is why the location of Fiddlewood Fields is a real win. Here you’re within easy reach of everything, with the option to retreat to this tranquil setting as you wish.

Gorgeous accommodation, well located and in the most enchanted garden setting, if you’re looking to treat yourself when next in Frontier Country, then look no further than Fiddlewood Fields.
