Budget Getaways Review

Koloniesbos Mountain Cabin is the epitome of your classic hikers hut. Originally the first hut of the Swellendam five day hiking trail, This little wooden abode has been brightened up to make it into a great family holiday cottage, perfect for two couples or a family with two kids.

Adding to the original appeal of the cabin is the fact that it’s still off-grid (solar lighting and mountain water on tap) and fairly basic. But it’s the location at the foot of the Langeberg mountains, where you can literally head out of the front door and onto the hiking trails that really makes this place shine.

Taking a quick scout around, you’ve got two bedrooms (double and twin), a shared bathroom (loo and shower) and a living area and equipped kitchen with dining table. The kitchen is kitted out with a fridge, stove and all the cutlery and crockery you’ll need.

As with most of the old hiking huts in the Cape, there is a lapa / braai area just adjacent to the cabin, here you’ve got some outside seating, and a braai area nicely sheltered from the elements…a great place to while away the evening around the fire after a day in the mountains.

Keeping busy here is all centred around the mountains. The network of hiking trails can keep you busy for days on end, so hikers and walkers, this is your spot. There are also great mountain biking options, as well as horse riding trails on offer at the horse farm next door to the cabin. Swellendam town is just a short drive away, making the dash for urban treats an easy one.

For the outdoor and nature loving, this is a simple and fun little getaway, which puts you right on the edge of those gorgeous Langeberg mountains.
