Nearly a decade on the block and we have finally discovered a perfect reason to spend an entire weekend on the southern tip of Africa: Langrug Lodge.
The brochure calls it “a perfect peace (sic) of Africa,” and for once, the blurb is spot on – Langrug is a gem. What’s more, it’s not a flag-flying ‘lodge’ as you might think, but a lovingly restored farm cottage in a secluded setting of flat horizons and an expanse of deep water called Soetendalsvlei – apparently, the largest pan of fresh water in southern Africa.
Langrug is a perfect example of ‘rustic luxury’. Not only have the original raw elements been retained, they’ve been creatively enhanced by a deft modern touch.
Keeping faithful to its humble beginnings, Langrug has screed floors, solid beam and riet ceilings, an open hearth, low doorways and thick rough walls.
There’s no electricity (thankfully!); instead, candles, paraffin lamps, gas and a woodburning ‘donkey’ will power you through the weekend.
The kitchen is drenched in a view of the vlei and combines country and modern elements. It is also stocked with everything you are likely to forget at home.
Ducking into the cosy lounge, a stuffed lynx glares from above the mantelpiece – a serial sheep killer that met his Moses after tucking into one mutton chop too many.
Langrug has two bedrooms, both with ensuite bathrooms – one of these a candle-lit number with a tiny Victorian bath.
Outside, a eucalyptus tree shades a braai area sculpted in stone; on the other side, a stone bench sets the scene for late afternoon whiskies. Added to this, you've now got a wonderful fire-heated, outdoor hot tub to play in!
Further out, Soetendal’s shoreline and grasslands are a natural habitat to an array of birds and small animals, while the vlei itself offers swimming, canoeing and fishing.
From Langrug, the open landscape unfolds to the white beaches of Struisbaai, the southern tip of Africa and the De Mond Nature Reserve.
