Budget Getaways Review
Meticulously restored and framed by typical Overberg countryside of rolling wheat and canola, this gorgeous thatched farmhouse is ready and waiting 10km inland of Struisbaai and Agulhas.
Deriving it’s name from the Middle English word “kype” - referring to a high status residence - Klipfontein Keep lives right up to its name.
Stepping over the threshold, the house sleeps a grand total of 10 across four sumptuous bedrooms.
Up the impressive spiral staircase to a mezzanine level. you have a double ensuite that flows onto a balcony and soft views. From here, it's a short step across to Eduard's Loft, a cozy den with bunk beds for the kids.
Swiveling back down the stairway, there's a ensuite twin and ensuite double at ground level.
The open-plan living area and fully equipped kitchen exudes grandeur, with exposed timber beams and thatch, tinted screed floors and counter tops, chandeliers, comfy sofas and all the space you could dream of.
Added convenience come in the form of DSTV, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. This is sounding better and better.
For dinner, there's the choice of traditional kitchen, all-weather braai room, or classic SA barbie on the patio. Your chop has never faced so many choices.
Past the lawned garden and recently added swimming pool surrounded by a wooden deck, the 1600ha Klipfontein farm has more than enough to do: Post-braai farm walks, cruising about on your mountain bike, spotting springbok, bontebok, eland and gemsbok from the comfort of the patio, jaunts down to Struisbaai and the tip of Africa at Agulhas.
Oodles of space, solitude, a hefty dose of class, this Overberg group retreat is destined, like it's baby brother Langrug Lodge, to become a BG classic.
"We had an absolutely fantastic time at Klipfontein Keep. It is a beautiful home in an amazing setting. Every room is beautifully decorated and well maintained. There was not one thing we needed that the house didn't have. Almost every window has a view out over the farm. We had trouble deciding where we would sit for breakfast/dinner/teatime, as there were so many options of chairs, tables and views! Loved the indoor fireplace (the entertainment room) and we even managed a dip in the pool! Wish we had more time to walk around and explore, see more of the wildlife. All the little details made our stay incredible!"

"There is a song that goes - "if a picture paints a thousand words then why can't I paint you" and that is exactly how we feel about Klipfontein Keep. It is really difficult to paint a picture of this gem of a place using mere words! A visit to Klipfontein Keep is not just a weekend away, it is an "all round" experience that goes down deep and etches itself into your memory. This home has everything that you need for a "home away from home" weekend and much more (things you hadn't even thought of). The personal touches and the attention to detail is one of the many things that makes Klipfontein Keep so special and inviting. From the moment you arrive you feel so welcome. Being avid photographers, we enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets across the fields on this farm. The pet donkey (Betsie) helps to add a little special touch, not only into our lives but also into the composition of our photos as well. This was our 3rd stay there and we have booked for more visits this year. It has become one of our favourite getaway places. We are proud to take some of our friends along with us so that they can also enjoy the experience and beauty of this farm. "

"All our guests could say on arrival when we asked them to join us for a weekend at Klipfontein Keep was "wow, wow, wow"! And that sums up the experience in this amazing place. The house is SO comfortable and has absolutely everything you need (and much more) for a weekend (or longer) away from home. The attention to details is evident in every area of this house, from the kitchen to the living room and the bedrooms. From the time of booking to the time of leaving, a person is made to feel so welcome. Even the donkey Betsie runs to greet you whenever she sees you. Exploring the farm was also an amazing experience. Beautiful drives through the enclosures with stunning photographic opportunities. All in all... this place is a gem! Once you have found it you don't want to lose it. Well done Johannes and Jenny. We will see you again soon."

"Words fail to describe the attention to detail put into Klipfontein Keep. Ample firewood, all the amenities you would ever need, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, ice maker, gas hob as well as electric oven and hob, jams, milk, honey, heated towel rails, full DSTV, wifi, the list goes on. You would be forgiven to think you are in a luxury hotel. Jenny really goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome. I would go back in a heartbeat."

"What an amazing experience at Klipfontein Keep! As you rise with the morning dawn, brought to you by an eager rooster, you feel refreshed and rejuvenated. Jenny went above and beyond to ensure every detail was crafted and presented with precision. We kept warm in front of the massive indoor fireplace and baked our own bread to feel like true farmers. The vast fields yielded curious cows and the friendliest sheep dog, who just happens to be a donkey!"

"This house is an absolute dream. It is beyond 5-star. A beautiful setting in green fields, complete with a beautiful fountain in the garden. It also has a little swimming pool and cosy outside visiting/kuier area. You have your choice of fire/braai facilities inside and outside! And there is an island-cooking area while walking into a full kitchen as well. Dstv, and Wifi and bunk beds for kids or two master bedrooms. Every bedroom has its own bathroom with exquisite decor. You have never had luxury like this. I promise you this place is worth so much more than you could ever imagine!"

"Klipfontein Keep is amazing - the house has everything you could possibly wish for. Having three en-suite bathrooms was a real treat. Jenny also left a few treats under the Christmas tree for us which was really kind."

"Wow! I would highly recommend booking in at Klipfontein Keep. From the moment of booking with Jenny (amazing) to departure the service was outstanding! The property is so well equipped, furnished beautifully with all necessary goodies. There were the most delicious home made rusks to enjoy in the morning with coffee, wood for the fireplace and a view to die for. This was like heaven on earth! Thank you for making this break amazing."

"All round fabulous!"

"Klipfontein Keep offered us all the things we value most in a getaway, a house that is beautifully appointed, comfortable both inside and outside, a stoep you never want to leave and an open braai place on the side of the house where you can sit under the stars and wish the evening was just a litle bit longer. We were surprised to find a private nature reserve complete with game for our own use, the veld and animals are beautiful and adds something other getaways don't offer. Bring your mountain bike, hiking boots or picnic stuff. The inside fireplace is equally special which allows this getaway to be an ideal destination for both summer and winter months and being in easy driving distance from Cape Town and suburbs makes Klipfontein an ideal choice for weekends away. We will be back soon."

"Wonderful!"
(visited April 2015)
"Klipfontein is a true gem. Decorated to a very high standard, you want for nothing! Slip into crisp, sparkling white sheets at night after star gazing on the open patio overlooking the farm, its true decadence. Both husband and wife are true hosts, we were treated to a city slicker tour of Johan's wildlife farm which includes buffalo, gemsbok, blesbok, springbok as well as oats, barley and canola crops, this is one busy farmer and yet he chatted to us as though he had all the time in the world. An added bonus, should you want to do more, is to ramble into Struisbaai for an afternoon on the beach. It was a great treat to visit the farm, thank you Jenny and Johan."
