Budget Getaways Review

Finding a spot to hunker down in the wilds of Hogsback can be a little like walking the labyrinth - you could end up going round in circles.

Hello, Maple Grove - your near ideal Amatola retreat just three kays on from the village centre.

Snooping around Trip Advisor, the guest feedback on this leafy spot falls just short of hyperbolic. "Thoroughly recommended." "Stunning spot." "Fantastic, you must stay here." "Treasure hidden in the forest." Enough said.

Tucked away in a fairytale setting of hazelnut and maple trees, the accommodation comes in the form of three private and lovingly tended abodes of varying size: The Chalet (sleeps 4), The Cottage (sleeps 2-3), and The Cabin (sleeps 2).

All three appear cozy, comfy and nicely decked with wall heaters, electric blankets and fireplaces for those snow-laden Hogsback winters.

Kicking off with The Chalet, this is the larger of the three and with two bedrooms is ideal for a small family or two couples. The main bedroom is ensuite and leads onto a patio, while the second comes with twin beds and a shower.

The living area is spacious and open-plan and revolves around a Jetmaster and telly with DSTV. Double doors lead to a patio with braai and private garden.

Another cosy spot, The Cottage features exposed beams and riet ceilings. With a double and two stack beds, it's well suited to couples or a family with a child or two in tow. Again, the lounge comes with all-essential Jetmaster, the bathroom with shower and bath. Double doors flow to a patio and garden.

The Cabin sits adjacent to host Peter and Lyndsay’s own house, and is the more budget option - now we're talkin'! Light tones, exposed beams, lounge with Queen Anne stove and DSTV (with PVR), separate bedroom with twin beds (King on request), a single bed in the living room, and a deck all stack up to easy-going appeal.

Drag yourself from the Maple nest and you'll find a long activity list: horse riding, trout fishing and birding excursions, hikes, a palette of art and ceramic studios, hiking and mountain biking, and various restaurants and coffee shops to top it off.

The verdict: Summer, autumn, winter or spring, if you’re heading to Hogsback we'd say head straight for Maple.
