The setting of this choc-box getaway is rather surreal. You’ve got a lush and fertile valley floor stretching out from your outdoor living space, a small river which winds its way past the cabin and that deep blue tint of the Witzenberg mountains cutting the skyline beyond. As if that’s not enough, there’s also the chance of spotting Springbok or Red Hartebeest roaming past your abode during your stay.
Righto, the scene’s set, let’s get onto the mounatin cabin itself. Ideal for a family of four (although a fifth bed can be added on request), the ground floor is made up of the living area and a twin bedroom, while the main ensuite is located on a mezzanine level. Up here the bedroom is decked out in percale linen, and the bathroom has a large shower and loo. On the ground floor there’s a second bathroom with free-standing bath and separate loo.
The living space is tastefully furnished and uber-cozy, with a fireplace to keep out the winter chill, not to mention the open beams, that sweet smell of traditional thatch and the warm vibe of timber walls and floors. Of course things can heat up here in summer, but fear not, the cabin has aircon. Open plan to the lounge is a well equipped kitchen where you can whip up a feast, as well as a dining table.
The cabin has a great combination of indoor and outdoor living, which works a treat, with a full length patio and doors leading out to it from the living area, this makes it hard not to spend your time just gawking at those gorgeous views.
If the heat of the day gets too much, then head down to the farm pool nearby for a cool off. While we’ve got you outside, there’s a great braai area adjacent to the cabin, overlooking the river and valley. Nice!
Out to explore, there are plenty of gravel roads to head off on either by foot or bike, and of course hiking trails galore in the nearby mountains. Tulbagh itself is an interesting historical attraction and has some great galleries, restaurants and coffee shops. Oh, and did we mention a great spread of wine farms to explore?
A great looking getaway, close to the Mother City and in a setting that makes you feel you're in another world. We say BOOK IT!
